Ok so my seeet broody hen was attacked by something last night and was missing this morning.. she was just hatching her eggs and all that was left was a bunch of feathers, blood and a few dead chicks with the darn flys already starting to lay eggs on them... while sorting though it all i noticed a lone cold survivor that was barly breathing so i brought the little guy inside to warm him up and noticed his mouth was covered inside and out with fly eggs! I pick as many as i could off but i know he swallowed several as he was warming up and became more active... he is standing now and walking around fine so i put him with a newborn from another hatch, and he was very happy for the next couple hours.. but he is crying in distress now 4 hours after i warmed him up and i am just worried if its possible for fly eggs to hatch in his stomach and start eating him!? And if there is a chance what should i do??

No, I don't think so. They have to go through the gizzard for grind and then digestive juices. But keep an eye out for anything strange.

Sorry for your loss. :(

He may have other internal damage that can't be detected yet though. The cold babes I warm up rarely make it even though they often show this quick recovery. Hopefully yours will be the exception. :fl

Did you figure out who your predator was?

Thanks.. he seems very lively still. And it is a big relief that it is not something that is known to happen! I am thinking it was a racoon.. mostly because we dont have anything else around here that would take the whole body, and is small enough to break into the barn..
