My Chick has an Eye-Infection and I Don't Know What to Do!

Here is what "pets supplies for less" said:
DUE TO LONG TERM MANUFACTURING BACKORDER, WE WILL NOT PRICE MATCH THIS PRODUCT

I guess that is the issue

There's gotta be a reason the manufacturer is in a "long term" backorder situation. It appears that there is a demand for the ointment, but either Pfizer simply decided it isn't worth making (profit-wise) or either they found a problem with it.

Interesting thing is that if you look on eBay you can find piles of it....from Turkey and a place or two in Florida. ???? Most expiration dates are 5/2012...the one in Florida is 2011.

FWIW,

Great thread! I used tea on one of my canaries that had an eye infection (closed red puffy eye) and within 4 hours the eye was open again. Saline didn't help much but the tea did the trick. It's a week later and no problems left with the eye. Great solution and one which I will continue to use!! Thanks!

Try checking some pigeon websites also they have eye ointments in stock New England Pigeon Supply had it last time I was on there.

Supposedly as is the case with Sulmet also the availability is limited because Pfizer recently bought the certain patents and is still working out the details and they currently aren't producing more. I learned of this on another thread from another member. Hope you were successful finding something.

I'm about to try the tea on my poor black jersey giant pullet. Her eye is almost swollen shut. Will let you know how it worked. Thanks for the idea!

iheartchkns, keep us posted on your results. I did end up buying some off of eBay from a seller in Turkey. Shipped and arrived with no problems and a decent price. Only thing is the paperwork/package is printed in Turkish.

I tried terramycin first, but it didn't work (yet). Not sure if it just didn't make it into the eye, due to the swollen eyelids or what. Tried the tea last night and again this morning. No improvement yet, but I can only put the tea on it in the morning and evenings, due to work. Will keep trying. Other than this issue, the chick seems content.

THat's the way mine was too. I have to admit, I did not find any of the product we mentioned here within a driving distance, or that were in stock to ship at the time. I just did saline twice a day, once every 2-3 days I put a DAB of bacitracin ointment around the eyelidhoping to get a bit in the eye, and the tea once every few days...the cloudiness never did clear up. She's still blind in that eye but the swelling and infection did go away. I am really convinced that either she was scratched shortly after birth and I didnt notice it until a day or two later, or she was born blind in that eye. She's had NO problems adapting until today actually. We let this bunch of chicks (now 16weeks old) out with the big 1 yr olds just before bed this evening, and our big 3 yr old rooster who rules the roost kind of gave her the run around chasing her and grabbing the back of her neck with his beak from behind (I'm assuming he was trying to show his dominace over the group and mount her?) and the poor thing tried to get away and with her bad eye and the unfamiliar area in the near dark with the crazed roo after her she ran into the fence a few times and almost smack into a board til she finally got away from him...poor girl. But seriously...she has no problems and is all the more loveable for it.
