My chicken ate a mouse and... *update*

Call around. Be very careful with the dosage. Is there a farm vet or a vet that sees birds? You can call them too.

Ummm If it ate a mouse that ate mouse poison (Bait0 That would explain the internal bleeding! It contains an anticoagulant. It causes just that! The antidote is vitamin K. Id hurry!

How much time does she have left? I just explained it to my parents and my dad says it sounds like a chicken version of parvo. Also, I read that it's on canines and people? So if we eat their poop we get it?

we dont have poison out, we stopped using poison ever since we got sticky traps that we put in our house. but these are outside field mice that like to steal from the lay feed and they live in the barley stacks, ive seen them scurry in there.

Even If you dont put poison out other people around you may have??? How soon after he ate the mouse did the bleeding start?

She doesn't have much time. If there is blood in her poop, it is important that you get her to a vet or start her on the medicine as soon as you can.

There is something called infectious anemia in chickens which is like parvovirus but is not. Birds are very different from mammals and this is very unlikely to be a danger to your family, particularly if you wash your hands and keep clean. Having just read most of a chicken health book, I think the only specific serious illness to be concerned about is bird flu, which is not what your chicken has.

At the vet's office, they disinfect the whole treatment room after a dog with parvo comes in. This is not that.

she ate the mouse 2 nights ago, this morning i found the bloody poop. tomorrow were gonna look for corrid and antibiotics. and some vitamins.
oh my god im so worried.... if were not able to get it tomorrow is she doomed?!?
omg omg omg is all i can say......... theyve eaten mice before so it cant be poison or it could be i have no clue. oh god please help me.
does petsmart have anything like that? what stores? teh only feed places around here is van dam farms, do any of you know if they have it?
but shes acting fine. shes alert, dust bathing, eating and drinking normally, laying eggs, roosting. so is the death spontaneous or something?

Could it be that her poop is bloody because of eating the raw mouse? After my chickens ate blue berries their poop was dark purple for a day and a half. Not sure that that would be it, but you never know.
Also I think you have to go to a feed store for Cocci meds, most pet stores don't carry that kind of thing. You should call the feed store you mentioned and ask if they carry corid, my bet is that they do.
Good luck!

you know something... i have seen bloody poop before and no one died. its just these droppings have alot of blood. the ones i saw before (like a month ago) looked like plain blood just dripped out. it was red not burgundy red wine color. but still ill try this corid stuff just in case.

OK... first off, calm down.

If it was two days ago that the mouse was eaten, it's probably not a poisoned mouse causing the bleeding. It doesn't take nearly that long for a mouse/rat poisoning to start showing problems...

Next... how is the hen ACTING? You mentioned she's still laying, right? Eating OK, drinking normally? All other behavior normal? A bird that has cocci, especially one that's at the bloody poop stage, is NOT behaving normally in any way at all. They generally have no appetite, won't drink, are puffed up and standing around... acting sleepy. They are clearly very sick long before the bloody poop stage.

Are you sure this is blood? Not normal shedding of the intestinal lining that is often mistaken as blood? Sometimes it can be what seems like quite a bit of intestinal lining, and can be mixed with any combination of their 'normal poops' that vary in consistency... Not mouse parts being passed? (one of mine ate a frog, then passed very red 'chunks')
