Hi, my hen, Pecky, is 4 years old, and I noticed lately she always has food on her beak, and she behaves very hungry. Yesterday I noticed some swelling under her beak, it’s pink on one side blue gray on the other side. When she tries to eat, she can’t swallow. The food kind of falls out. She’s separated from the others. Please help.

Can you look inside her beak and see if there is any growth or yellow canker? Any picture is welcome. How is your climate? Could she have been bitten by a tick or spider, or could she have been injured? How long has it been like this? Have you ever seen any tumors in other birds?

I don’t see anything on the other birds, I was out of town last week, but I do remember about a week and a half ago, she came to me and cleaned her beak on my pants, I thought it was odd that food was on her beak, but didn’t think much of it. I can see her tongue. She very well could have been bit by something. I thought maybe canker? But I haven’t experienced that yet. Here is a picture of the inside of her mouth.

Sorry, I meant to say, I can’t see her tongue

These areas are mildly concerning. Could be canker, could be some other kind of discharge. I would try to clean/remove them. There seems to be a lot of bruising, which makes some kind of a bite or sting a likely possibility.

Have you tried offering her wetted food? Maybe a kinda soupy mash would be easier for her to swallow?

The yellow looks like canker, but it is very small. Is that her tongue in the bottom of her beak? Is it blue and injured? She may have gotten attacked in her mouth or injured. Spiders or ticks can cause the bluish color, but the spider bite probably would cause necrosis. Can she eat and swallow water?

She tried to eat, but had a hard time swallowing, the food just kind of falls out. She is drinking but I’m not sure how much water she’s actually getting down. I made her some scrambled eggs, she tried to eat some. I think that might be her tongue, if it is her tongue, it is blue and swollen. I have some amoxicillin and penicillin, should I start her on something?
