My chicken is pecking me!

I have always wondered what they may be thinking, when they do their chicken stuff?

Today I went out to gather eggs and one of the chickens pecked the hand with the egg. Broke the skin on my hand and the egg. I tapped it on the beak and said "No. Bad chicken". But what bothers me most is none of my chickens have reacted this violently to me removing eggs before.

I am learning that some pecks are curiosity, yet others are bad chicken behavior. I think if we spend enough time with our chickens, we can learn to predict and understand behavior.

Don't feel bad. One of my grumpy old hens screams and bites me every time I gather eggs and she happens to be in the nest box. And I don't mean bites me like a peck on the hand, I mean she bites me like an alligator.
She's a good layer so I endure it.

She may be feeling like brooding those eggs. We are now on our third broody hen this year, they get a little cranky with me taking them, but since we have no rooster yet, I have to swap out her eggs for fertilized eggs we get for the girls to hatch

i have 14 chickens 2 of them are about 4 months old, today they pecked my 9 year old daughter that was petting our youngest chicken. she glanced up at her face and pecked her eye and hopped off.Does anyone know why she may have done that?

I have heard of this happening before. The chickens see shiny things (like eyes) and want to investigate. They peck to see what it is. Hope she is okay.

I had 2 hens and the other one, Posy, was the top chicken. Since she passed away Sally is alone and she has started pecking me. My husband acts like hes pecking back with his fingers and she runs away from him. I don't want to make her afraid of me but today she pecked so hard she drew blood and I don't want this. So I quess you have to just poke her back.

Wear long pants for whenever you go into the coop. I do because one really pecks me and I am thinking I may have to switch to jeans, which are thicker. Then I will try ignoring her to see if that works. Good luck.
