my chicken laid a golf ball!

Yup. I would say the ball rolled into the broken egg. It doesn't fit right in the shell. With the top of the shell sitting on the ball the way it is, the ball wouldn't properly fit in the egg. I'd say the chickens pulled a fast one on ya

Not only do hens move eggs around in the nest, but they can CARRY eggs, too. They roll it close, tuck beak over the egg, then press it into their fluffy "bosoms" and shuffle over to the new location. My first broody moved her eggs twice; the first time to get out of a stifling hot nest box during a heat spell, and the second time back into the nest box when it got cooler.

I managed to get a photo of the second move. Look closely and you can see the green egg under her "chin."

And if it could get into the digestive tract, how would it get from there to the reproductive tract?

Thank you for posting that. The digestive tract and the reproductive tract are discrete entities. It's the equivalent of saying that you are breathing through your hair. There's no physical connection, or anatomical way to do so. Not to mention that it's probably physically impossible for a chicken to even swallow a golf-ball without killing itself.

It looks like super-glue and too much time on one's hands to me.
