Hello everyone on BYC, I was just wanted some advice on my chickens. They lay eggs every day, but I was wondering if it's possible for a chicken to be attached to her eggs?

if so I was wondering if I should leave some eggs in the coop for them or just take them out. I love my chickens, but I feel so guilty taking their eggs out. The first thing they do when I take them is start squeaking loudly. After that they just seem sad. I know they are just chickens, but I just feel as if they want the eggs./it's like their babies, right? And if I can/do leave them in the coop how long should I leave them in there for???? Please help me guys I don't know what to do.... I love them my animals are my babies . Sorry guys that's probably weird

I would say that chickens aren't as emotionally protective as wild birds. They will not guard a nest unless they are broody. Your chickens are for eggs Right? If so I would continue to take the eggs and let them get over whatever it is about the eggs that bothers them. No offense but chickens are stupid with funny and loving personalities. They will be fine I promise. Just remember that the eggs are for you not for them and if you leave eggs in there they will go broody and you will lose lots of eggs during that process.

Ok yeah I will continue to take the eggs and no if fence takin. All if my girls have different personalities and really stupid, but they are hilarious.

thank you

If the hens are broody or planning on it, they want to collect several eggs. After doing so, they will try to hatch them in earnest - usually getting very protective in the process. They may puff up huge and growl or peck if someone tries to take their eggs.

If you don't have a rooster there is no chance the eggs are fertile - a hen doesn't know that and will try to hatch them anyway.

Welcome to BYC!

This is not a weird question at all! But no, unless a hen is broody, (wants to raise chicks) she has no emotional attachment to her eggs. She lays them and she is done with them. But when her hormones are pumping and she wants to be in a motherly way, then she will get defensive of her eggs.

So feel free to take them, eat and enjoy them! And if you have any other questions, feel free to ask. That is what we are here for.

So glad that you joined our great community and welcome to our flock!

Ok thanks guys. Today when I went in the coop she raised her hackle feathers, puffed up, and her wing feathers were spread out and overall looked like a turkey
