My chickens are suddenly eating my conifers!

I don't really care about these little trees, as we inherited them from the previous occupants of our house and they're really quite boring, but I'm worried about the chickens.

Can they eat the foliage of miniature conifer trees safely?

Are they eating the foliage, or could it be that they're finding bugs and spider eggs. It could be that there are seeds on them.

They are definitely snapping off the ends of the foliage and eating it. I watched one of them try to feed some to our four week old chick earlier too! (It had the sense to ignore it.)

Why have they all of a sudden started to eat this tree? It's so odd!
