My chickens, ducks & local island wildlife in AU.

Welcome to the coop! I use the Forums and Articles tabs at the top of the page to do research. You can get lost for hours. It's nice to know you are minutes away from getting help with questions and emergencies! I always check in the "What's New" section as well at the top of this page. This way I can read how I may have a similar question or help give some advice.

Firstly, I wish to thank everyone so much for their kind welcome and sympathetic words, it was pretty unexpected and very pleasant to read them. The tips for new members are very useful. Plus it is so interesting to read about other countries too.

So since joining, I also have:
  • some bad news 🐍☠️☠️🐤🦆:hit
  • some good news 🦆🦆🦆🦆 too
  • plus more photos.

Snakes: 🐍 - bad news
  • ☠️ I lost 1 silkie chicken🐤(7 months) overnight about 1 week ago.
    • All that was left were many feathers (about 40) in the chicken nest.
    • Our property has a 6-foot timber fence all around.
    • We also have had about 3 events of snakeskin shedding very recently, one long one hanging from the gutter, the others on the ground nearby.
    • Therefore I suspect it was eaten by a python.
  • So I built a snake-proof fence around the duck house, but without a top...
  • ☠️ Then, I lost 1 duckling 🦆 (9 weeks) which just died overnight with its eyes open, just 2 nights after the silkie died.
    • It had red dot marks around its duck bill. (see photo, if you want)
    • The large drake duckling had similar marks on its bill too.
    • Again I suspect a snake attack, but maybe a smaller one.
  • So I built a snake-proof cover for the duck house openings too. The fence is redundant now. So far, it is working.

Ducklings: 🦆🦆🦆🦆 - good news
  • Having heard the news, my family bought me 4 extra ducklings (2.5 weeks), giving me a total of 6 ducklings & 1 bantam chicken now.

Stories:
  • I sat down on the ferry the other day. At the next stop, a lady entered with a pram, took out a wrapped bundle and sat beside me.
    • After a quick glance, I realised it was a baby joey. 🦘
    • It was being cared for after it lost its mother and had an injury.
    • Quite a pleasant surprise to see it, so I took a quick photo too. (see photo below)
  • @fluffycrow, I had a bunch of stories planned in response to your suggestion, but I've lost the list now and my STML does not help. I'll post it up if I find it again.
Photos:
  • Please enjoy some new photos of my 4 new ducklings plus my 2 other ducklings mingling and getting familiar with the new intruders.
Regards to everyone.
