My "Chickens"

great collection

I've gotten a lot of it over the years from lots of different places. I'm very good at spotting chicken-shaped objects. I lean toward more realistic-looking chicken things; I don't have much that is cartoony.

A lot of the random stuff (the purse, baskets, etc.) was given to me as gifts. Some of the smaller figurines are from dollar stores. The dishes are from a large supermarket in our area called Meijer. My glasses are Pfaltzgraff; the pattern is called "Daybreak." I also find a TON of stuff at antique stores and flea markets.

The antique stores and flea markets are where I find the hen on nest dishes. I just got another one this weekend.

eBay has plenty to choose from, too. I've looked there for hen on nest dishes before, but the prices are a little high. I prefer to examine the dishes myself to determine if they're rare or just imported reproductions before I buy them. (I'll buy either, but the difference is how much I'm willing to pay).

The wine is called Rex Goliath "47-Pound Rooster" wine. I've seen it in quite a few places. They sell it at World Market here; it was about $8 a bottle when I bought it. It's supposed to be good, but I haven't actually had any yet. I'm still working through a Traverse City cherry wine from St. Julian Winery (Frankenmuth, MI).

The bottle is really pretty. I actually bought a bottle for my uncle's collection when they had a housewarming party. I think it would fit nicely into any wine collection if one is looking for unique and original labels.

Or SOMETHING!

Girl, you got it ba-a-a-a-a-d! I'm envious of your collection!

Thanks, everyone! The scary thing is that you're only looking at about half my chicken stuff.

I did have chickens six years ago. Before that, I had them for about ten years. In 2002, I gave up keeping chickens because college was keeping me away from home year-round. I ended up moving to the city after I graduated, got a job and got married; as you can see in one of my pictures, my neighbors are quite close to our kitchen window. They would not appreciate my love of roosters. (We rent a townhouse).

Depending on the election and the economy in a year or so, we'll be building a house in the country, along with a large chicken coop.

So you don't worry too much about me, here is a gratuitous picture of me back around 2001 with my Silver Phoenix rooster, Antonio. (Ignore my "barn hair" day; that looks like a yard work outfit and I think it was windy...hee hee).

There is a great little store here in town that has things like that. In fact, she knows I come in around Christmastime and makes sure she has some rooster/hen stuff for me to pick through!

I've found some really cute things in that little store and the prices are good. Plus, she lives in town and I'm assuming that she spends here in town, too, which I like.
My mom will find chicken things and get them for me, too. You're right... the best things are found at the thrift stores!
Pfaltzgraff does have that great pattern... I'm not sure if they still have it or not. I saw the cutlery and thought it was very cute. My mom saw some rooster stuff at William's Sonoma. $120 for these canisters but I told her that she's more than welcome to get them for me!

I think Pfaltzgraff usually keeps all of their patterns forever; I'm not sure that they retire anything, at least as far as replacements are concerned (could be wrong, though!).

I love those canisters!! If I didn't already have plain red ones (to match all the combs and wattles on the other things in the kitchen), I would want those!

I hope someone gets them for you!
