MTchick 2009: I have no idea what kind the golden coloured ones are, they are called "Frey's Special" from the hatchery I ordered them from. For my layers I have Black Stars, Columbian Rock x Reds, New Hampshire x Barred Rocks.
Their lights are on all night, because I only have clear heat lamps, thats all the hardware store out here sold (really small town) However their lamps are on a dimmer switch (to control the temp) and are not on at full strength. Poor chickens would need sunglasses if they were. lol.
To make the feeders, all I did was take a plastic bowl from the dollar store and cut it down 1/2'' all the way around (with a pair of tin snips) I sanded the edges quickly with a little palm sander. Then I just took a tall yogurt container and cut holes all the way around the bottom, maybe 3/4'' in diameter, and attached it to the bowl with a small screw, washer, and a nut. When the chicks are a bit bigger, I will just make them a bigger feeder with maybe a 2 Litre icecream bucket or something.
