True enough if you want a few birds & don't really care what kind. However, if you are interested in a particular breed that isn't available in your area you need to have birds shipped. Also what about the person who wants to buy a large quantity of layer or broiler chicks? Where would you go locally to buy 500 pullets?
Every year millions of chicks are shipped in the US. The vast majority of them arrive safely. To expect that there will never be a bad outcome isn't realistic. I doubt anyone here who hatches can honestly say they never lost a chick.
