There has to be a better way in this country to ship animals. Or you just buy the best you can locally. That takes time and investigation. However, the experience for you and the animal has got to be 100% better than the above.

True enough if you want a few birds & don't really care what kind. However, if you are interested in a particular breed that isn't available in your area you need to have birds shipped. Also what about the person who wants to buy a large quantity of layer or broiler chicks? Where would you go locally to buy 500 pullets?
Every year millions of chicks are shipped in the US. The vast majority of them arrive safely. To expect that there will never be a bad outcome isn't realistic. I doubt anyone here who hatches can honestly say they never lost a chick.

Yes, that was the problem here. I wanted Lavender bantam cochins.....try to find some of those locally. I wanted Gold Laced bantam cochins.....try to find some of those locally. I wanted Mottled bantam cochins.....try to find some of those locally.

I did end up finally finding a pair of Lav cochins....will pick up next week, about an hour drive. Also found a mottled rooster from the same person I will get. Can't find a mottled pullet. Found some gold laced bantam cochins about 2.5 hours away (so 5-6 hour round trip). Going to pick them up tomorrow.

There is nothing wrong with ordering from a hatchery......that is sometime the only way you will get what you want. I have been trying to find these same birds locally for months.....and I don't just want a pair of each, I wanted a larger group....1 cockerel and 5-6 pullets. GOOD LUCK finding that. I will have to buy these pairs, wait for them to lay, incubate the eggs and then grow up the babies to get to where I am trying to go.

Sure would have been a lot easier and cheaper to get the hatchery birds. If there was a hatchery nearby, I would just drive there to pickup but good luck finding a hatchery with the breeds I want, near east TN.

I have placed a new order...for Ducks! I placed an order from Metzer Farms which should be shipping tomorrow Monday May 17th. Here's hoping things go better this time!

I am hoping to make another order from Ideal soon.....hopefully last time was just a post office glitch and things go as hoped this time.
