My chicks just arrived!

~KH~ :

They all seem to be doing well today, so I changed the sugar water to plain. How soon can they have a little pan of play sand for dust bathing?

my silly easter eggers were trying to dust bathe in their feed at one week of age.. I never give them sand til they are ready to go outside.. i'm sure others do it differently.. I just never saw the need

They can have a pan of sand right away. They will eat some of it and that will help prevent pasty butt that comes with the stress of shipping. You don't say where you are from, so I don't know how hot it is there, but black Australorps are really heat sensitive. That is probably why the one chick was not too perky when you first got her out of the box. I got six BAs at TSC the first day of March and had my brooder at exactly 95 degrees at chick level. I thought they might be chilled from the ride home, so I quickly got them under the heat lamp, only to see them panting and spreading their wings within five minutes. I had to lower the temp to below 90 degrees the very first day and still they stayed very far away from the lamp.

I believe it's an Easter Egger.. .I got one EE and one mystery chick, and I think the all yellow one is the mystery one. Does anyone have any guesses as to what it might be?
