My Coop; A Process

You can see this is just the same siding set in a frame. I used piano hinge from Home Depot to hang it framing both the wall and the panel with 1x3 allows the panel to sit inside the wall framing. You can maybe see in the third pic that the screws go through the whole thing and have nuts on the inside. Its more secure than short wood screws.


I was lucky enough to have some salvaged smoked lexan. Using these was a little trickier but not to bad. They are however affected by hot sun and can warp badly.

This is very concerning, that wall needs a bottom plate that rests on the floor,
attaching the end wall studs on the sides of the joists is asking for big trouble.

VERY true! I was so hung up on such a long span with no wall studs I didn't even see that! To be fair I didn't even expand the picture as I am dealing with the morning chaos here too.

The great part is that base being done makes a wonderful work surface to lay out and build the wall before raising it.

This video is pretty good.
They set the studs on 16" centers. To do 24" centers mark at every 24&3/4" then put the x at the 24" side.

Lots of great videos out there. I chose one that isn't an hour long.

I do agree with 21 hens that you need at least a stud to the floor every 24inch under that sill to the floor this will help support the walls along with windows . plus you will have something to nail the plywood to once you get to that stage

Hi everyone! It's been a while. I've been busy finishing the coop and run plus moving and my daughter graduated high school last night.
So my flock of 8 BO have been in the coop for about 2 or 3 weeks and seem to be very happy. They even put themselves up at night, which is awesome since all I have to do is a head count and close the door!
I have an enclosure inside the coop for my younger flock of 9. They seem to be happier but I can tell that they are wanting to get out in the run. Unfortunately I don't think that they aren't big enough yet, so they will have to wait. The big roost. Eventually that rectangle will be a window I think.

This is still a work in progress so here's my question. I have shade cloth over part of the run for shade. Do I need netting to keep the hawks and other birds out? My BIL and sister say no.

Are hawks A PROBLEM in your area??? Yes,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Netting would keep those flying raptors out.

We have a ton of them and some Eagles (who would think in MO lol) Time to put up the netting. Thank you for your reply.

I would say, yes, absolutely. Will keep the chickens in too.
