I am just now reading this, but I am glad that you are listening to your gut! I remember seeing the Oprah show that the other poster was talking about. I always try to listen to my gut, and I've gotten in trouble every time I haven't.
Luckily nothing too major.
One time, I was in a store, and felt someone walk up behind me. It gave me the heebie jeebies so bad that I didn't turn around and look, I just ran out of the store. Sounds crazy, but a woman was assaulted in there that day. I am 100% positive that it was the person that came up behind me. I felt crazy til later.
I also had a repair man come to my house. He was being polite, nothing weird like your guy. I just had a really bad feeling about him. I had a young cat, less than a year old. Sweetest cat in the world...the repair men usually get a kick out of him "helping". He attacked this guy, out of the blue. Jumped up on his leg, latched on with teeth and nails, growling loudly. I was so stunned, I just stood there for a sec and then said, "I think you need to leave." He couldn't get out of there fast enough. He has never done it to anyone else. I have a feeling he would actually protect me from an intruder.
There have been other incidents, but those have been the weirdest. I understand it making you feel crazy or paranoid, but you never know about people. Having a DH that works out of town, much less, out of the country, makes it worse.
I would suggest getting a gun, but be sure to get a lock for it, since you have young kids. I have a Taurus "judge". It shoots .45 cowboy load and .410 shotgun shells. Since it holds the .45 rounds, it doesn't count as a sawed-off shotgun, when in fact, it basically is. I keep a .45 in the first cylinder and .410 in the rest. I haven't had to use it, yet, but I feel safer knowing it's there. It doesn't have a bad recoil and it isn't too heavy.
Good luck and stay safe! That comment about shooting customers was insane!
