sad but true yesterday my dad arrived home to a loose dog(has now been re homed) missing his collar. The neighbor soon called asking if he had a dog that matched the collar and was told that shorty and another dog had killed twenty chickens.
I received the phone call this morning with the question of what was a fair replacement price for the poor hens, I told him most likely around 10.00 a piece.
Is this a fair price or should he offer more?

Nope, you better raise your price estimate.

Why rehome a problem dog? He is going to be a problem where ever he goes.

no sense killing a dog if you dont have to..

Oh I am sorry for your Dads neighbors and your Dad

I am assuming the dog is usually contained either fenced in or on a chain and this has probably never happened before. Its to bad that he had to give him up. Although I understand he just wanted to do the right thing. I think it is very nice of him to offer to pay for the chickens. I am sure it is different in other states. In MT I get $5 for laying hens. I think $10 is more than a fair gesture.

The puppy was re homed out to a friend with a larger fenced yard and also knows of his behavior problem.
The price estimate was based on the started pullet price from Meyer Hatchery, the only price list I had on hand this morning. They are selling 16-20 week old pullets for $6.90 a piece so if you think ten is to low what would you suggest?
My father is pretty upset that his dog caused these deaths and wants to make it right.
The location is Eastern Idaho if that makes a price difference.

He is right to feel that way, and paying for an incident that he indirectly caused is nothing compared to having ill feelings with a neighbor. I would settle it no matter what, because it is right and because it is stupid to allow something like that to poison anyone's relations with their neighbors.

I feel very bad for your dad, but I'm not sure if the neighbor would feel that $10 per chicken was fair. It takes more than $10 to raise a chicken to laying age & Meyer Hatchery may have pullets for $7, but I've heard that shipping is VERY expensive for adult chickens.

Where I live, people sell their laying hens for $15-$20 each. You really need to check out the prices for replacing the chickens in your dad's area, plus find out what age/type of chickens were killed (were they adults or chicks?), since adult chickens are much harder and more expensive to replace. Try craigslist and see what people are asking in eastern Idaho.

so true, its awful that this happened for all involved but it would be made all the worse if it ruined a relationship with a neighbor. I think your dad is trying o do right and I hope his neighbor realizes that from the gesture.
