My daschund wants them for dinner

Rottie / Doxie cross !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That made me laugh out loud literally. Didn't realized that was even possible. If the mother was the Doxie ................... OUCH!!!!!!! and if the male was the Doxie the female must have laid down!

Haha yeah we get that a lot. He is about three feet long and a foot high, and probably thirty pounds. Funny looking thing, but a good dog, but often too smart for his own good.

Please refer back to post #8...now add one more. I'm down to one chicken! The dogds were there first so they aren't going anywhere. I'm just gonna have to keep the hens kenneled in the coop/run while we're gone during the day. IDK, it just doesn't seem right to keep chickens locked up all day long. I love letting them free range...but feeding them to my doxies doesn't seem right either.

How big is thier run?

Mine stay in a run 24 /7 well they are locked in a coop at night for saefty.

We have a big enough yard that we added an extra fence seperating the girls runs from the dogs area, I call it the "Tucker can't eat anymore of my chickens" fence.

The coop is approx. 16 sq ft. The run is in the 50 to 60 sq.ft. range (can't remember exactly). I know I have enough room for 4 hens in the coop/run. I really loved being able to let them free range during the day. Cuts down on the amount of poop in the run and the amount of feed that they eat.

We had a Doxie growing up who would never stop stalking and killing the chickens. She was relentless. There was no teaching her or getting it through her head to not kill them. It was all she thought about, day and night! They look like such innocent little dogs, but no. We finally gave her to friends whose daughter really wanted a Doxie and they didn't have chickens, although she did manage to kill their rabbit when it got out of it's pen. Some dogs.........
I now have a Husky/German Shepherd mix and you would think that would be dangerous. I've introduced her to the chickens and she is just curious. She wanted to chase them a bit because she is still puppyish but meant no harm and we taught her right away to not do that. We would never leave her alone with them on purpose but she got out of the yard once and I saw her in the chicken pen from a distance. I thought i'd find a gruesome scene when i got over there. Nope. She was just hanging out with them. And then there is my old Basset Hound who couldn't care less that they are there.
Dachsunds just have it in their blood I think. I've heard so many stories about other ones doing the same thing.

Oh no! I'm so sorry! I plan to keep my chickens in the run when we're not home as well and only let them free range when I am home to make sure Oscar stays inside. I've started the dog whisperer obedience training and have been discouraging any "chicken eating/chasing/whining behavior" and I truly believe he's taking to it. Any time he acts up, I say in a firm voice "Oscar, no chickens for you". He gives me that scolded look and stops right away. Not that I would ever trust him alone with them, but I believe it helps. He's always been obedient so I'm hoping it takes. Then I reward him with a treat when we get inside. Guess it helps that he is mostly and inside dog.

Sorry for your loss! Well, live and learn right?

My 8 yo doxie female will kill a chick, but after a broody hen chased her one day, she is terrified of all large fowl chickens now. She's a bit of a weenie...no pun intended... I don't even take her to the farm anymore because she just hides behind my feet and trembles when she sees the chickens free ranging.

We have have 2 Blue Heelers (Australian Cattle Dogs, if you will) and a Toy Rat Terrier- I will try to get pics to post of the chickens and dogs hanging out together-I believe it may have something to do with the pack order. Pack order is very important to dogs no matter what size and I think that people often don't realize that they are considered by their pets to be 'the pack'. A happy dog understands that every person in the family is higher up in the pack than he is-

Just my two cents-

My friend had a hen commit suicide by jumping the fence into her dachshunds yard. She said she saw the bird sail over the fence but before she could even get to the door the 3 dachshunds had her down to nothing but little feathered bits.

I have racing greyhounds that you'd think wiould be all about chasing and killing, but it only took a day or two to train them to leave the flocks alone. Sadly I lost one dog to cancer recently. He was my flock guardian and would chase anythign that threatened the birds, even a hawk once.

Sorry about the loss of your guardian dog! That's so sad!

We have a 6ft fence, with netting over the top, so there will be no flying out! I'm working on Oscar's chicken behavior, but I know will never be able to trust him.

Gives me second thoughts on getting another dashchund for the kids when he passes. I guess I will really have to take that into consideration!

SHEESH, theses chickens were a lot more work/money/concern than I thought they'd be! I am having a great time though, don't regret it at all (yet)!
