My dog killed a chick & it's my fault!

I am so sorry this happened to you. I've been there and it's very hard to get through. Don't blame yourself, don't blame the chick and don't blame the dog. Instinct is stronger than training at times. Hope your new year goes much better from here.

I am so sorry! I have had my share of dog incidents and the best protection is a very safe coop, run and tractor.I imagined my chickens free ranging, but that will never happen here. The chihuahua and lab want to kill . It's instinct and we just have to do our best.Like Maya Angelo says ,"when you know better, you do better".It's a sad life lesson.
A heads up....learn now how to take care of injuries. As the chickens get bigger, should the dog have an opportunity again,he mey not kill them, but they could get hurt.Be prepared and have the proper supplies .Read through emergencies and injuries BEFORE you need it! JMO:)

train the dog to leave the chickens alone..
and it was your foult that chick got killed. you put it in harms way..
you knew your dog would bite it if given the chance.. and you still have not trained your dog to co- exist..

Uhm, how can you even say that ?? NOONE knows what there dog is going to do at every moment of there weird thinking!!!! You are being harsh !!!! Too harsh !!!!

Just b/c it's a dog doesnt mean she knew it was going to bite the chicks head off, Im pretty sure if that was a known fact she would of never done it. I mean come on you think she was sitting there saying "ohhhh im going to hold this chick so my dog can come bite it's head off, I know it will"

Dog's and cat's can be very unpredictable animals, I have a cat who will cuddle and lick the baby chicks in the brooder, uhm... Not normal.

I agree that she should work with her dog so this doesnt happen again !! And that could take time !!!

Dr.Doorlock - IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT !!!! WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES !!!! BAD THINGS HAPPEN TO US ALL !!! WE ARE NOT PERFECT PEOPLE !!! Now you can take the time to fix the issue (the dog) so this doesnt happen anymore, Again my heart goes out to you that you had this happen to you

I have 3 Boston Terriers and a cat. None of these animals except the one who killed the chick had any interest in the chicks. NONE. Delroy had shown respect for my space when I was with the chicks. He had sat there for hours with no show of aggresion.

When he attacked, it was like a lightning bolt. He jumped over 4 feet high and bit with instinctive accuracy. Yes!, It's still my fault, but it has made me very aware. The poultry netting around the run will be doubled and buried 6 to 8 inches. The run will be more like and an aviary with a tree inside. I will keep them safe.

If you had been there, you would have wept like I did.

I agree it is not your fault. Accidents do happen all the time and we can never be 100% on our toes all the time.

But you can train dogs never to kill. Working with the dog is as important as just building a stout pen for the chickens.

But it sounds like you will never let this happen again if you can help it, a stout fence and some dog training would be a good combo.

Sorry for your troubles. I have many animals on the farm and it is always a battle to be sure all is safe and sound. Some critter is always being a nuisance at some point during the day...LOL-LOL

JVLS,

Things happen all the time. Never Predictable
Nothing will go the way you want it. But try so that it don't happen again.
Big animals of any kind is a force to be recond with.
Which is true. I have a very large German Shepard but I am very careful about it even if she is with smaller animals. No matter how good anybody thinks their dog is or trained.

Things happen........

Sometimes its not good to post things like that. Even though you think it is wrong in your eyes. But instead give your support and dont give any negativity. I am sure it is upsetting enough.

Doorlock,
I am so sorry for your loss. nobody is really to blame on anypart.
Like I said...It happens

And I hope you dont't beat yourself down over it.
Hugs to you
