You might want to check with your vet. When our 14 year old poodle died last year, our vet made arrangement to have him cremated. They returned him in a lovely little wooden box with his name on it. It was not that expensive and our daughters feel good about it.

Good Luck!!

I can't believe I'm going to make myself relive this by telling you this story...

Two years ago I let my little dog, Kramer, outside (off leash) in our yard. It was late at night and our street isn't busy since we live in a subdivision... it's certainly not a highway, or even a road for that matter. Anyway, I was standing at the door putting my shoes on when I saw an SUV coming down the street. My little 20 pound dog decided on that night that he was going to go get himself that SUV. It happened so fast, I didn't even have time to react. He ran, full speed, directly to the SUV, that was slowing down, and was run over by one of the back wheels. By that time I was in the yard screaming hysterically. He managed to make it about 75 feet or so into our yard and laid down and died.

Point of the story is that sometimes they can go a distance after they are hit/run over before they die. Kramer bled from his mouth, as I'm sure his internal organs were a mess.

I'm really, really sorry for your loss, I know your pain well.

I care for a feral colony, and live on a suburban street that has (or I should say supposed to) a speed limit of 20. I have seen people accelerate while a cat was crossing the road. Have lost many of my own beloved indoor cats that got out by accident this way. I also had a large lab mix that ran after a squirrel that got hit by some $@!^)^% that was going about 45 and didn't even stop.
The dog was 3, and had to be put down because of a broken back.
