Thanks wegotchickens I was worried about them taming since when I bought the adults they were nearly grown and already tame. I separated the chicks from the old broody today. They are old enough at 5 weeks as she started laying eggs again. I found a baby monitor at the 2nd hand store a few weeks back intending to use in the main cage. It is in the baby D'uccle cage now.
Amazing but, this evening I heard meowing in the bushes. I found a 2nd kitten the barn cat had in the garden bushes. I thought there was only one. I felt so bad for her and went out and bought some kitten milk replacer and have been feeding her with a syringe. She gets to be a house cat now.
We have lived here 10 years and the barn cat was here before us. We have kept two of her kittens as house cats. She never had many kittens at a time so there was never urgency in getting her spayed because neighbors, relatives always took the one or two kittens she had every spring.
If any of you remember I was proud of her because she slept in a hen nest and ate rats/mice but, left the chickens alone. It took five years of living here for her to let us pet her but, she had become very tame. I'm guessing by the scene she tried to protect her kitten.
I documented the scene today with photos in case something comes up again. I'm sure you guys have seen enough photos of torn up chickens to know what it is all about. Instead of that here are some photos of the kitten found hiding under the bushes.
