My D'uccles are gone killed last night

Thanks wegotchickens I was worried about them taming since when I bought the adults they were nearly grown and already tame. I separated the chicks from the old broody today. They are old enough at 5 weeks as she started laying eggs again. I found a baby monitor at the 2nd hand store a few weeks back intending to use in the main cage. It is in the baby D'uccle cage now.

Amazing but, this evening I heard meowing in the bushes. I found a 2nd kitten the barn cat had in the garden bushes. I thought there was only one. I felt so bad for her and went out and bought some kitten milk replacer and have been feeding her with a syringe. She gets to be a house cat now.

We have lived here 10 years and the barn cat was here before us. We have kept two of her kittens as house cats. She never had many kittens at a time so there was never urgency in getting her spayed because neighbors, relatives always took the one or two kittens she had every spring.

If any of you remember I was proud of her because she slept in a hen nest and ate rats/mice but, left the chickens alone. It took five years of living here for her to let us pet her but, she had become very tame. I'm guessing by the scene she tried to protect her kitten.

I documented the scene today with photos in case something comes up again. I'm sure you guys have seen enough photos of torn up chickens to know what it is all about. Instead of that here are some photos of the kitten found hiding under the bushes.

I named her Ji (Chinese for lucky!)

What a little sweetie. I am so glad she was able to survive. My goodness I am so happy my property is fenced. When we started looking at properties, we insisted that first of it it be fenced. With the postings I see here all the time, I am so happy we did. We live in a rural area and I always see dogs running around. Mine stay in my yard and I expect others to have theirs home too. If mine do decide to take a run I have to go hunt them down and bring them home. I don't know why others won't take care of theirs.

I hope you are able to get your new chicks to be friendly.

No, because I bought it from my dad for 75.00.

The rest of the money will buy me some new chickies and patchwork stuff. I already have some rolls of heavy gage chain link fence with hardware cloth inside for the small ones. I have not used that yet because it was so heavy to work with. That will go around all the pens instead of welded wire again.
