My D'uccles are gone killed last night

Oh the owner isn't being cooperative. His claim is that I'm picking on his dog because it is a Pit. The Sheriff wants to know the amount. The owner basically told the Sheriff that he would give at most 2-3.00 each for them because chickens are dirty farm animals.

They were far from that. They were very tame and I spoiled them. I let them free range supervised during the day and they would follow me around the yard.

I dearly love my millies and would be heartbroken if they suffered the fate that yours did.

Fair market value is anywhere from whatever you spent to $200.
Tell the officer that these birds cost $3 each as chicks, but yours were mature pets and had a much higher value.

I'm going with LoupGarou's price of 49.95 per pair and the difference of the hen I will have to do without. I will ask for two pair with 90.00 shipping + the price difference between the hen unpaired. Around 200.00 and about 25.00-30.00 for pieces to repair their cages.

It was not just hardware cloth it was welded wire with hardware cloth along the bottom. It looks to have bitten down and pulled holes in the wire. Tough monster dogs. The Sheriff also told me to get a gun and shoot it if I see it on my property ever again. I'm not even sure how I can fix the cages to keep these types of dogs out.

. I might just buy one of those new hardened dog kennels (my dime though).

Dogs can definitely get through hardware cloth. That's why I recommend welded wire -- it's stronger.

Did the dog actually rip the welded wire, or did he pull it away from it's supports? I think one frequent problem is to not make the seams between the wire rolls, or the attachments to the posts, strong enough. Whatever you can report will help all of us to avoid a similar tragedy in the future!

When you figure up the replacement costs, make sure to itemize ALL your expenses. Gas, food, housing, whatever you can think of. Don't cheat yourself!

Tell the owner & sheriff that the breed of the dog didn't matter to the coop that was damaged and the birds that were killed. It doesn't matter if that dog was a pit bull or a poodle: it damaged your property and killed your pets.

The Sheriff has a good idea. It doesn't look like the owner of the dog cares what damage his dog does to other peoples property. It's his responsibility to keep his dogs in his yard. It's likely that you will have trouble with this dog in the future. Other people dogs that are in your yard killing your pets and destroying your property are pest, nothing more.

Legally he is responsible for any and all damage his dog does to your property. You can take to small claims court if you have to,

Don't forget the cost of ammo to shoot the dog with.

BTW where in upstate SC are you?

You can take to small claims court

Take them to court!

Make them pay full price for those chickens, plus the cost for building a brand new coop, chicken feed, and how about the emotional and mental trauma you and your family has experienced? Make him think twice before letting that dog loose again... and if he does, make sure your gun is sighted in and don't miss.

Actually Gaffney right next to you. The welded wire it seemed to bite down on the individual wires and bent a hole while it pulled the welds apart. The hardware cloth is just twisted with a large gaping hole in the middle. It was cheapo welded wire from Lowes.

Animal Control set out a large trap today if we do not shoot (night attacks). If it happens by and gets into the trap I'll take it to an animal shelter somewhere in NC.

Oh man what a drag I went to check on the plants in the garden and found my barn cat and her kitten also dead. Looked to have been squeezed to death. I am upset all over again. I warned this man and called the cops on this dog over and over. This is BS!
