my duck needs surgery !!!!

Nana is alive ! She has to be on a liquid diet for awhile.. any reccomendations?

@Miss Lydia

Or any way you know of a good way to cover wounds? It's literally above her left leg right where the joint is pretty much and it feels like an awkward way place to cover.

We managed to take a shirt and tie one end around her neck area and another end blown by the butt. Cut holes in it for her leg so it would come up high enough to cover it for now. Now sure I'd there is an easier way...like just wrapping gauze around the lower half of her body?

Whew didn't think I'd ever find this thread. Wow I never even got an alert for this.

Did the vet say to keep it covered? and how did they do it?

If liquid what again did the vet rec?

Well the vet honestly had no idea. I'm not kidding when I tell you no one has ever done this type of surgery before and they don't have any direction on care except for the typical stuff. We obviously don't want her picking at it, which she really wasn't but she was constantly grooming so we figured it was better to cover it because she was grabbing on feathers surrounding the area.

The vet just recommended anything soft, water downed for the most part and not too heavy. It's so sensitive we can't risk extra tension from mush getting stacked in her vent or potential oats, corn etc scratching against the wall.

How about baby bird food from the pet store with warm water added? I know @casportpony rec that for tube feeding.

I am not sure I'd cover as long as she is in a clean environment away from flies. And she isn't messing with the incision. But If she is over grooming then it maybe best.

I tried that for her first surgery for chick starter and warm water making it like a soup. She didn't respond to anything other than peas then. However she was in much worse shape post op that time around.

I gave her maybe 20 peas squished in my hand and she took those easily. I think I'll let that sit for now and revisit in a few hours once I can see she's digesting and pooping it out. I brought Kiki in with her to see if she could encourage her to eat the blended peas...jokes on me because Kiki just ate it all. lol

Aww precious.

I'd try to gradually add more soupy feed to her peas she needs more nourishment than what the peas are giving her. Or got to pet store and buy baby bird food soup it up along with smashed peas. BB food has a lot of calories which she needs right now.
