Welcome to BYC and sorry your first post was under such sad circumstances. I too had a duck recently die somewhat unexpectedly, however, her death was medical in nature and not so much via attack.

It is truly baffling how the ducks could have gotten hurt. There is an answer for what happened, obviously, it’s just a matter of figuring out what it could have been and/or eliminating all potential suspects.

If you’re in a home with more than one person, is it possible they accidentally got hurt/killed with the chair by accident? Maybe another person went to scoot the chair back to get out of it and it (for lack of better word) squished them? Or, unpleasant to consider, maybe on purpose?

Because if you’re alone or otherwise certain it wasn’t the human cohabitants, that more or less leaves animal(s) as culprits.

If you live in an area conducive to reptiles (namely snakes) maybe one is in your house? Otherwise it’d have to be your dogs (maybe they got let out by any potential co-habitants), or another animal having gotten in the home.

Unfortunately, without considering animals as the culprits, it only leaves the ducks themselves or a duck murderer-burglar as options. I don’t mean this to be coy, but I don’t know of too many people who would only break into a home for purposes of killing ducks. But! Also in your favor, weirder things have happened, I’m sure.

It’s just unfortunate that you’re in such an unfortunate position because you likely loved them very much. Just also sucks because, if you’ve eliminated so many possible culprits in your mind, we’re not going to be much help other than to reiterate likelihood of it being an animal.

And, for what it’s worth, if your dogs ended up being the culprits, I doubt many, if any at all, would label you a horrible person. I’ve read posts where otherwise angels of a dog suddenly got ahold of ducks, or a latch that previously was closed somehow became un-latched.

I hope you come to share other experiences here at BYC other than this (understandably) terrible experience as there’s much to be gained and/or contributed here and I’ve loved being a member and was a long time stalker before that.

And your posting in graphic detail why? also do you have a cat or something? if so and you let it have access to the duck that might be what killed it just a guess/thought. also I don't see how this should be posted in new member intros maybe a older member can comment. either way I feel sorry for the duck

Are we talking about ducklings or young ducks? An estimate of their weight?
There are not cats in the house and dogs were safely enclosed so, most probably rats. Something of racoon size or bigger wouldn't drag a duckling that can transport easily in the mouth. Look for traces in the blood trail. Show photos ot the trail here.

If the dogs had a chance to get in the room they are most likely what killed the ducks (sorry it sounded like you only had the one). if you think that not possible then did you leave another door or window open and either a cat or other animal came in because of it?
