My eggs taste very bland

My opinion follows. It's not gospel.

You said they've only just started laying. It often takes some time for your new layers to get everything firing on all thrusters. I'd give them a couple of months. I'd also feed the omega-3 boosted feed, if you can get it. Studies have shown higher omega-3 content in eggs from hens fed that, and omega-3 boosted eggs sell well around my area. I also like to know I'm getting eggs that are more nutritious for my own table.

I've also had bad reactions to factory eggs. I'm allergic to lots of antibiotics and chemicals, so even my hamburger is from cattle raised for me by family members. No additives of any kind.

Layer feed has the calcium boosted in it for one, which is why you don't have to give them oyster shells if they are on it and you won't have issues with thin or soft egg shells. The nutritional profiles of the two feeds are quite different. I give my layers layer feed only free feed in a large metal feeder. They can eat all that they want. A few times a week I do give them a small pan that has wet chick starter in it that I have added cayenne pepper to. Not enough for them to stuff themselves on it though. They love it and it helps with egg production. I do wholeheartedly recommend the omega 3 boosted feed. I sell my eggs and people tell me that they prefer them to other peoples eggs that they have tried.

My 16 week old white leghorns just started laying 4 days ago. I cooked some of the eggs this morning and was so disappointed. I heard they would be so good but they were so bland. We started feeding them the layer food when we got the fist egg and we give them meal worms and bananas, watermelon, peppers and we let them free range for short times during the day. Any ideas?
Egg Plus by Global Herbs ( amazon) makes a big difference, (full of turmeric and other antioxidants) also giving them fresh spinach and sprinkling a bit of garlic on their food wil help.

Wickedchicken6,

The reason I even have chickens is that regular store bought make me have migraines. I went a decade never eating an egg.
I hear you. I just thought that's how eggs made me feel and thought eggs didn't agree. Then we got chickens. I still wait for that ill feeling after I eat our eggs. We just had some for supper...delicious!

When I first started coming to BYC and people said they wouldn't eat store bought egg...I didn't get it. NOW I get it...lol. I won't eat eggs if they're not ours. And apparently I've ruined it for several other people who get eggs from us. They don't want store bought either.

To explain mine I give free choice chick starter that's 21% protein because I feed grain (we farm) and it balances the protein so the average is what they're supposed to be getting. I also raise chicks and it just works better to incorporate them when chick starter is already in the feeder in the coop. I give oyster shell and eggs shell on the side in it's own feeder.

*I also feed eggs for a protein but that's far out there for most.

When I got back into chickens, went to Dels/TSC, asked for layer and was given a Dumor brand. I used to get Home Grown Layer & never had issues, also ferment my feed. Noticed with Dumor their poop was smellier & softer, finished up the bag & put them on Flock Raiser with Oyster Shells on the side. BIG DIFFERENCE in poop & quality of birds. Not bad mouthing Dumor but it's my personal experience.
The worst part is Dels keeps running out of Flock Raiser (pricer), changing alot over to Dumor which is also a Purina product as is Flock Raiser but I find a difference (quality?). Recently went to get some scratch (treat & exercise) for my girls since they can't free range, they're no longer carrying the one I used to get but now it's a "PP" brand.
So now I'm considering changing over to Nutrena, we have a feed store that carries sole Nutrena products. Years ago purchased my rabbit feed/supplies from them, never had an issue nor did they "run out".
Switched over to Dels/TSC only cause that's where the person I get my chickens from goes to. Now to do research on Nutrena's products, anyone?
I like the Nutrena Naturewise line of feed. I also use Purina. GC

They are not all laying yet. Should I still stop the grower feed? I only give them the bananas and watermelon a couple of times a week. Is that ok or should I stop that?
I mixed the start and grow with layers feed 50/50 for 2 weeks, then all layers. I mixed the rest of the start and grow with scratch grains 50/50 and scattered on dry ground till gone. Remember only what they consume in 15/20 minutes daily. Fruit a couple of times a week is Ok.
I personally don't give them any. My girls free range 2 hours daily before sunset. So they eat grass and clover, dandelion greens and weeds, bugs. GC

If you want the best tasting eggs, try fermenting your feed. My egg customers are spoiled, and will drive right by a neighbor who sells eggs to get eggs from my flock. The taste difference is b/c of the fermented feed. A very clean, almost nutty taste. And I second the salsa. I ran out of my home made peach salsa about a month ago, and have so been missing it. Today, i harvested some cilantro and garlic scapes from the garden, and made some fresh salsa. So super yummy. I'm back in business with salsa for my daily egg!!!
