My eggs taste very bland

Since you can't let your girls forage anymore try picking dandelion greens from your yard and putting them in run...they make richer, darker yolk and are loaded with nutrients and vitamins. I also use Nutrena Naturewise for chicks and Nutrena Hearty Hen for my layers..both have probiotics already in there. My girls can't free range at the moment, so I bring the greens to them. They do have a large run, but til I move they can't be loose due to city ordinance, even though I have an acre of land and only 1 neighbor.

You're getting a lot of different opinions because everyone feeds their birds differently, but this also goes to show there is no "right way" to raise chickens. My flock gets fermented grower in the morning (Scratch & Peck, because it's organic and local) and layer pellets the rest of the day (also organic and local). When weather is nice they have all day access to grass as well as whatever they can reach in my veggie garden. My usual treats are mealworms, scratch/cereal, fruit or veggies, a couple times a day in small quantities.

I can't say my eggs taste better than the local, pasture raised organic eggs I was buying before, but they're certainly comparable and even fresher.

Not sure what it really depends on. All I can say is that the eggs from my chickens taste clearly better than the usual commercial eggs here (factory farmed). I have made direct taste comparisons a few times, boiled or fried one of each and eaten them at the same time. I haven't noticed a big difference after changes in the chickens' feed - in winter, my chickens got layer feed and grass clippings, now in summer I had them free range for a while on dry rocky ground (had to stop that this week because they were eating styrofoam that they pecked out of our house walls), other than that they get layer feed, bread and kitchen scraps. Grass clippings and green stuff do for sure improve the color of the egg yolks.
