I let mine roost outside in a tree(still building the coop) more out of necessity, got them into the coop and should have kept them in there because the next night I couldn't catch all and they went back to the tree, an owl got one, the rest came running to me and now they are locked up for several days until they forget the tree. They've been in that tree for weeks and wouldn't you know it finally got spotted by a predator. It was a thick tree too. Sometimes, they don't know what's best..
My rooster was easy to catch because he'd roost in the chair on the poarch, it only took 3 days for him to adjust to the coop, but even though it's so close to the house I know eventually a coon or coyote or something will take him, so, lock up time.
