Thank you everyone!! How wonderful to be understood! My workmates thing I am a nut. When I found that first egg, laying right in the middle of the nest box, I began to squeal and pat my gals and tell them what GENIUSES they are. They responded with their own loud squealing and lots of squatting. HOW INCREDIBLY DELIGHTFUL! I am now so sorry for anyone who has never had the experience. Worth the wait.

OK...explain this "squating" behavior for me...I'm still new at this and my recolections from my childhood are not the best...

My girls are due to start laying in about 4 weeks!

Congratulations on the egg. What a miraclulous event that people take for granted when they're just buying any old egg from the grocery store. I hope the thrill of collecting eggs from our own hens never gets old.
I have 3 bantams that are molting so no eggs from them. I also have two young Golden Comets. One has been laying for over a month and her sister has been squatting for a few weeks. Now she goes so far as to sit in the nest every day but it's all just a TEASE. Grrr. One of these days....
