My first hatchlings

She seems to be doing well, but she keeps going back into the coop and leaving 1-2 on the ground peeping their heads off until we come rescue them. I think I need to make some modifications on the ramp; although I'm not sure their baby brains are going to connect the ramp to the coop...but its gotta happen sometime

Portia, they are adorable! I remember when your SS were just chicks, because I had some that were just a month or two younger.

Isn't it a heart-warming experience watching a mama hen and her chicks? I've had broodies 3 times, twice this season, and I just love it! Right now I have my EE with 2 store-bought chicks, that are about 3 weeks old. (I have no rooster)

Enjoy your new adventure in raising chickens!

Thanks Lynn. Its certainly an adventure. We just adapted the ramp to make it chick friendly. mamma has been good at trying to show them, but she just can't forgo the wings and the chicks just look at her and go, 'huh?' as they flap their little stubs trying to loft up to where mamma just went.

Just this week, mine graduated with mama to the roost. It's so cute to see them snuggled up next to her, and hear their contented little noises.

How many did she end up hatching?

Wow, all the way to the roost! Mine finally was able to coax all 8 little ones out of the coop and down the ramp. The first thing she did was take a dust bath, the the babies all piled into the resultant depression and had their own dust bath. I just went back out and they are all tucked up under her sleeping in the grass. Boy does mama seem happy to finally be out of the coop for more that a few minutes at a time. The chicks seem to be enjoying themselves also.
