Hey everyone! My name is Asha from Salt Lake City! My husband and I just purchased our first house and I can't wait to get chickens. My family hasn't had chickens in a while so I am excited to start again. Any tips from anyone? Our new home is sitting on a 1/4 of an acre so I will have plenty of space for my vegetable garden and chickens. I hope to hear from people and I am excited to be a member on backyard chickens!

Hello and welcome to BYC! SO HAPPY TO HAVE YOU!:) Here are a few random tips to remember: provide one nest for every two hens so there aren't any squabbles, provide about 4-8 square feet per bird in the living quarters, switch pullets to layer feed at 18 weeks, and of course enjoy them!!
 
Welcome to BYC! My recommendations are use 1/4 inch hardware cloth (very strong mesh wire) instead of chicken wire which isn't very secure, always keep dogs and chickens separate, make sure your coop/run is predator proof, and most of all enjoy!

So far as more egg layer breeds go, for egg numbers alone, the Red Sex Links (Golden Comet, Red Stars, ISA Browns etc) for brown eggs and the commercial White Leghorns and crosses for white eggs are probably the most popular layers around. If you want breeds that don't lay quite as well but will lay for a longer time, Orpingtons (lots of people really like these, great pets though broody), Australorps, Plymouth Rocks, Sussex, Delaware and Wyandottes are some other popular very breeds that usually have nice temperaments, they all lay different shades of brown eggs. If you like a colorful egg basket, the Easter Egger, often sold as Ameraucana by hatcheries, are a fun breed because they usually lay green/blue eggs, and then there are the Welsummer and Marans for those dark brown eggs.
