My First Quail

We have 5 chicks. 3 eggs are still in the incubator. I don't think they will hatch. However 1 of the 5 chicks just hatched today. I thinks I will wait another day just to be sure.

My own little paranoia is setting in. I'm being super careful and following the incubator directions, turning them quickly and carefully so they're not outside it for very long, all that stuff, but since I've never hatched anything before, I have no idea if i'm doing everything right, or if i AM doing everything right, if i happened to get bad eggs. On day 6 of incubation now. It is pretty unpredictable, I can't help being a little wary. We shall see how it goes.

incubating is easy just relax. Keep the temp steady and the humidity up; you can't have to much humidity. The chicks have an easier time hatch if it is around 80% I just put a small bowl of water with high sides or a small cup of water to get the humidity up. If the chicks look like they are in distress help them out but remember some chicks hatch slow and others pop right out of there. they do take breaks and sleep a little in the middle of hatching, it is hard work. if the membrane looks dry under the shell take your finger in the warm water in the incubator and wet it then rub the shell until it is moist. that will help the chicks if they are taking forever. you can watch chicks hatching on youtube and see what to do if you need to help them out. Hope this helps!

They are eating and drinking and one is whistling like crazy. I had my brooder set up with just newspaper on the bottom then switched to pine bedding from my feed store. And they seem much happier. I will try to get a good picture of them for you. How are the eggs doing? Are at a candling stage yet?

Ooh sounds like theyre doing well!
Lets see, today is day 9 of incubation. I tried to candle some of the lighter ones, some lit up, some were almost entirely dark. I have jumbo browns so the eggs are already pretty hard to see into. Im going to candle again right before i set them for lockdown and hope for the best.

Lockdown is tonight... still nervous, but hoping for the best. I've removed one of the eggs that was obviously infertile so i'm at 19.
