My first time...we have pips and peeps!...(pics)..day 22

Pretty darn close! I do have my "beak" glued to that window.

Anyone care to guess or explain why the white eggs are the first to start pipping/hatching? The brown eggs I got from Miss Prissy and the brown eggs I got from the same flock as the white ones haven't shown even the slightest "pip" yet.

Cynthia, I could easily hatch for someone else, but these along with my hens will be enough for a while.....I think.

Also, the corrugated sectioning device may have been a good idea, but it needs to be taller. Little Rickee not only plays soccer, but he is going out for the hurdles team too.

Now we have 3.

I'm no expert but.......

I read an article that said commercial hatcheries typically dispose of eggs that take more than 21 days to hatch. It's not profitable to keep waiting for the last few to hatch. They've been doing it for decades which selects for chicken whose eggs hatch right on time. And selects against those that hatch late.

Many BYCers have no problem waiting an extra day or two. Which means the selection for a 21 day hatch might be a little less strict. But if the white eggs came from hatchery stock.... maybe..... not sure

The 10 white eggs and the 8 brown eggs came from my neighbors flock....so nothing commercial in this bator.

.....and of course we all know MP's (24) are not commercial.

Couple of ignorant guesses?

The white eggs look smaller than the brown, so maybe a tiny bit faster development?

Maybe the light passing through the shell stimulates them better?

Different breeds is another obvious one....

Wish I had thought of that- the ones I just hatched had thick brown shells, and the membrane was very thick as well!
