My friend keeps her chicken inside and it poos everywhere!

I feel the same way about keeping a cat in the house.
Don't see HOW you can compare the two ;-) as cats RULE :celebratebut to each his own...

But FYI- cats are FASTIDIOUS about cleaning themselves and unless you are truly not interested in good care for your cat(s) OR your self/family then they are litter trained from the get go- stay inside, and I always cleaned up each time they used it...or when I was working once or twice a day at a minimum and had at least one box available per cat and/or per floor.... I used natural non-perfumy litter and no one ever commented even when I gave them plenty of opportunity! ;-) but I do digress...😂

Having a chicken inside to me is NUTS... I love mine like crazy but they're not even allowed in the garage!! (I get that much but just not "OK" here...) And that has been put to the test ;-) recently as I have a sick little one (twin to the one in my avatar!) who I'm having to jump thru hoops in order to put and keep her back in the coop for temps that were dropping into the 20's at night...I just didn't think she'd make it alone without buddies to cuddle with and my DH is not comfortable leaving an electric heater on in barn- I get it... don't normally think they need heat but... sick one who's lost too much weight is an exception...ANYHOO!! :)

People that keep a cat inside are always the last to realize their house reeks of urine.
Agree. Just like smokers don’t think/know their house, clothes, hair, smells like stale cigarette smoke. Both my parents smoked and had a cat in the house. After we visited them on Sunday afternoons we would go home and take showers because of smell/cat hair.

I'll admit I've known people like this for sure- I was a home CRNI for 4yrs (RN that only dealt with IV medication after being an ICU RN for 8yrs) and after that was a Realtor for another 5-6yrs so you can IMAGINE the number of homes I've been into.....

The worst is when it's a family member... But often it's been dealt with to the extent of treating even concrete AFTER extensive cleaning- cat urine is just a relentless odor if it gets into something porous... but most times, it's still CLEAN even if it offends you...still say you can't compare that to someone letting a barnyard animal that literally poops ALL the time including in it's sleep- to a pampered house cat.... but again- to each his own!

HOWever- I gotta say, your comment is really quite unlike any I've seen so far on this forum....let's just agree to disagree and leave it be!! :idunnoI'd love to still believe this is the friendliest forum I've ever been on... 😌 ...

A LOT of people have cats that are "kept inside" and I don't think you MEANT to insult THAT many people- or at least I hope not!

Let's stick to chickens, eh?!

Yikes! ;-) Well.... people who smoke indoors honestly (again based on thousands of homes I've been in) do not seem to CARE what their house smells like much less make an effort to assure their home doesn't smell of cat urine.... Just sayin'... I mean, they've given up on their home's value as it's near impossible to sell a home of someone who smoked indoors! You can literally scrape the nicotine off the stained walls/ceilings....

Does make me remember though how I'd have to wash my hair after going to a club back in the 90's when people were still allowed to smoke in them!! YIKES- it was awful...put your clothes in the wash and go to bed with wet hair....😝

I would quit going over there. You can always invite her to your house
That’s what it’s going to have to be. She has dog allergies, but salmonella vs allergies, I choose allergies. Now to complicate things, my 16 year old is good friends with her daughter. I think I’m going to talk with my kid about the concerns I have, and let her read an article or two.

Just quite going over there. Unless she has a mental health issue, she knows good and well that it’s unsanitary hence her actively trying to clean it up. No amount of articles are going to make that light come on. While yes it is disgusting it’s her house and she is free to let a chicken poop in it as long as the chicken isn’t technically being neglected. If she asks why you stopped going to her house be honest “I enjoy your company susan which is why I love having you come over here to visit, but last time I was at your house I stuck my hand in some chicken poo.”
This is great. Thanks!

Tell me your friend does not have children.

That is not a sanitary way for people to live. You are not crazy. Not going over there again is a valid response. I would also be worried about the germs she brings into your space on her clothes and shoes. I don't think I could eat anything prepared in her home. It's not just the poo, it's the constant chicken dander and feathers that would be a problem for me.

Giving your friend educational material and articles is kindly meant. Even giving her chicken diaper(s). If I were you, I would do that. But be prepared that there is a possibility for this to backfire on you and negatively impact your friendship.

It may soon become apparent which is more important to her, your friendship or her chicken?

Sorry you're having to deal with this issue. I really hope you have a good outcome.
She has a 16 year old, who doesn’t want the chicken inside, and a husband who is immune compromised who doesn’t want the chicken indoors. I’m actually really mad that she’s chosen the chicken over the health of her husband, and everyone else.

I’ve stepped in it under my chair. My husband picked up what he thought was cardboard… nope, chicken poop. She lets it roam the house, no diaper, and although she tries to clean it up immediately, she often doesn’t. I had to ask her to pick up a big old dried up chicken poop on her carpet where I was sitting.

I love this chicken. She’s hilarious. Her eggs are lovely, her clucks are lovely. But her vent feathers are always covered in poop. She climbs on the coffee table and eats out of dishes if she gets the opportunity.

She won’t diaper, she won’t confine the chicken. I’m grossed out, worried about disease, and upset that her husband hates having the chicken indoors and she just doesn’t seem to care.

My friend is so lovely, but I think I’m not going to go over to her house as long as the chicken is inside. I just can’t get over the grossness of chicken poop being left on the floor, or being on the floor ever.

What am I missing here?

I danced around the issue a lot. She’s an animal lover, and a very gentle soul. She adores this chicken. I’ve asked her to clean up after it poops, but she usually doesn’t do it right away. But the more I look into it, the more I realize how sick chicken poop can make you just leaving it in the house, the more I realize that I can’t spend time over there, at least, until the weather warms up and the chicken is outside. But even when it’s warm, she lets the chickens come inside and wander around in and out.

I love that she loves animals so much. But I’m to the point where I think I don’t really want to go over there. I want to send her some of the articles I found, but I also don’t want to be that friend who gives advice where it’s not wanted.
I wouldn't go over there, that's gross
