Brazilians laugh at themselves, they say they´re sugar-men, dissolve when it rains..(so they run for shelter)...I think to see a Brazilian in such cold weather could be amusing!

We went to a place in the mountains, very beautiful there, with some friends and there was a waterfall. The water was so cold, being from the mountain, but some of our friends just had to go into it. They were so visibly shaking with the cold! I can´t understand what pleasure the experience could possibly bring! As for me, I´m quite happy to stay here in the heat, thank you.

Lol after being 2 or so weeks in the negatives and single digit temps I'm very much so done with winter. I've dealt with cold snowy winters for 21 yrs so far and I'm still not used to it. I would love to live in a place thats warm all the time like Brazil. But the year round warm weather comes with a price, like poisonous spiders and snakes. To me I'd rather have snow than deadly creepy crawlies lol. But the good news is it looks like the January thaw is here. Its supposed to be in the 30s and 40s the next few days. Close to 50 on Saturday. I'm very excited.

Heatwave! Wonderful!
And speaking of poisonous things.....do you not get poisonous spiders and snakes in the States? I thought you did. It´s probably like here, it depends on where you live, being such a big country. There´s a growing number of poisonous spiders in England too. The only poisonous snake there is the adder, or viper, which isn´t too bad.
Here there are a few poisonous snakes..the rattler, and a couple of others. People around here let their dogs roam, so they can get killed sometimes by the snakes. You can still keep the snow, though!

Different type of snakes live in different area's of Missouri. Like copper heads and water moccasin we have not sure of any other kind of poisonous snakes here in MO where we live.

We have Timber Rattlers, Copper Heads our 2 poisonous snakes, and brown recluse spiders and blk widows,. I almost lost a finger to a brown recluse spider it was in a bag of shaving.

I bet you have much more in the poisonous department though livin

Here where we live there are mainly 3 poisonous snakes, the rattle(cascavel), the coral and the jararaca. There´s another one, but can´t remember the name. We keep cats here to keep down the number of rodents, which in turn helps not to attract snakes. The chickens eat up just about anything on the ground, so that helps too. We only once saw a snake here, a rattler, when we first bought the place. The cats, chickens and ducks get the spiders. My ISA chickens will go for the bigguns, too! There are a few species of nasty spiders, probably more or less what you have there, but I only know them by their portuguese names. And there´s one that is quite aggressive, rears up on its legs to bite!

Brazilians in general are frightened of most critters, so just kill them, whether they´re harmful or not, they generally don´t know, and as they don´t know much about them, they tell us all sorts of silly nonsense, so we have to do our research on the internet, but it´s not all correct, we have to re-check some of the information.
There are some folks here, though, one of our neighbours is one of these, who are very aware of wildlife and observe animals...they´re very interesting to talk to.
Recently some of our friends here were shouting about a snake and wanting to kill it...it was a slow worm! They were horrified when my daughter went over and picked up the poor thing. She gave them a quick nature lesson! We also have to keep an eye out for hairy caterpillars. Some can be very toxic. Even the chickens won´t touch them! There are some beautiful ones, though!

Oh I forgot about hairy caterpillars yep we have some that can pack a wallop too. My flock won't touch any thing hairy. lol
About being afraid, some many folks are terrified of snakes that they will kill anything I actually like having blk snakes around they can get to be around 6'long and will kill and eat copper heads and also keep the rodent pop down, last year was the first time one got hold of one of my ducklings at 2 days old, he lived but I killed the snake, first time I have ever had to do that. He was wrapped around the lil ducking when I found it had pulled the duckling through the fence and the duckling had a nasty bite on it's leg, but I brought it in and cleaned it up kept it inside for the night to watch over it, next day I gave it back to it's mama, would you believe it turned out to be a drake? lol thats okay though I'm just glad it lived.

My geese make me laugh. There are some water snakes here, they´re harmless, don´t get very big. Do no harm.
Also, lizards that skulk around in the water, but they steal eggs so I don´t like them. Now, I know if there´s one of these snakes or lizards around, because I can see the geese doing a 'rubber-neck' thing down by the water. They all stay together, chatting about the invasion, heads up to have a good look...so funny.

On the other hand, the chickens will grab a small snake and go running around with it, followed by the rest of the mob. Also funny.

That was a close one for the duckling! I´ve lost ducklings here with carcará (type of hawk) and gambá, the ugliest possum-like creature I´ve ever seen, terrible teeth. They just slice straight through a duckling, poor little souls. I lost about 6 ducklings like that, and some were about 2 months old! It hasn´t happened again for a couple of years.
