My girl went in for a spay this morning...

Winnie had her follow-up yesterday which was supposed to include suture removal. However, the doc said she's healing so well, some of the stitches have started to dissolve already and it actually took three of us to even find the stitches! So the vet said we could just leave them in until they dissolve since trying to pull them out would probably cause more irritation than it was worth. They got a good laugh at her molting bare tail and rear end :)

I asked about the birth control implant and they recommend it be changed every 6-12 months which I thought was a big range. However, one of the nurses stated that their chicken was spayed a year and a half ago but never renewed the birth control and that hen is doing very well. I guess to be on the safe side, I could get it changed yearly. I was quote $150 a year for it.

She is officially off all meds and can start having limited, monitored outside time. This is because it's cold in Seattle right now and she's missing about half of her feathers. She and Olive had an hour together last night though and were both so happy about it! So far all is looking good!

How's she doing?

Thank you for asking! She seems to be doing really well! We still keep a close eye on her but she’s outside full time now. It’s been in the 30s at night but her tail and butt feathers are coming in nicely from her molt and plucking from the procedure so I’m sure she’s staying warm at night. She seems healthy and especially happy to be back with Olive and doing all their chicken stuff together. Here’s a pic with all her new backside feathers (her neck is still coming in):

I've been a mess for the last week. Winnie is our special gal and she's had egg laying issues her whole 1 year of egg laying life. Previously when she was eggbound, the vet could help with the egg aspiration and extraction. However, this last egg that was found stuck about 3 weeks ago was the one that would force us to make a very difficult decision: spay or euthanize. We scheduled the spay a week ago and this past week I've spent countless hours wondering if we're making the right decision and making sure she stays as healthy as possible. She's been in a weakened state but was in great spirits, ate and drank well, and still tried to do chicken stuff with her best friend, Olive.

I just talked with the vet and was informed that she is coming out of anesthesia well, the surgery went well with no unexpected complications, and she's expected to make a full recovery as long as the next 24 hours go well for her while they keep an eye on her overnight. She even went straight for her worms when she was waking up! I just wanted to share my relief with you guys! I'm so hoping that recovery goes well for her and we can have our happy, healthy Winnie back within a month or so.

Winnie is precious. How did things turns out? We're in the same boat now. Did the procedure stop her laying? Birth control?

Thank you!!

Hello! Winnie did really well with her procedure! It went better than I expected as I'm generally a pretty nervous person when it comes to making healthcare choices for my animals and not knowing if I'm making the right decision. We opted for the the birth control, though we heard from a couple of people it may not be necessary. But, we decided to do it just to be sure. Here's the thread I started back then: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/my-girl-went-in-for-a-spay-this-morning.1334041/

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Hello!
Thanks for the reply.

The implant appointment is in one hour. I'm really hoping this works for her. She's such a wonderful gal. I'd really like to defer surgery if at all possible, indefinitely. I will do my best to make regular updates...and perhaps get some pics of the procedure if at all possible.

Well this is very stressful. After 45 minutes of me growing more concerned they took her for, what I assume, would be twilight anesthesia to put the implant in. I had been reading about topical lidocaine and thought we would be in and out. But no such luck. They gave a nasal sedative and topical lidocaine but she was still too perky for the procedure.

She also did confirm that there's no research actually supporting the oviduct removal. Just anecdotal.
