My juvenile goose sometimes acts like she has trouble swallowing. She has been eating and drinking good but acts like she is gagging at times. I believe that she has a lump at the top of her neck that I don't notice on my gander. I have tried looking down her throat but can not see anything stuck in there. I have felt her neck/throat but can not really feel anything but at times she seems to have what appears to be a big bump right at the start of her throat. Has anyone experienced anything like this. At times she appears to not feel well and goes back to the chicken house or run to rest. Thanks.

How old is she? and does she have access to grit?

She is 10 weeks old. She free ranges during the day so she has access to all of the "gritty" stuff she wants. Do you think that this is sufficient or should I offer grit too. Our driveway has a layer of sand so it is readily available. Thanks for your suggestion.

I'd say she has plenty of access to grit. add some ACV to her drinking water just for a boost to her health, it's great for whole flock Un pasteurized. As for acting like she has something in her throat maybe when she eats she is guzzling too much at once, do you keep feed out for them at all times or just put it out occasionally? Seems like if she had something caught other than maybe food she would be doing this all the time. does she have access to deep water for head washing and cleaning? Also how long has she been doing this?

Thanks for your help Miss Lydia. I will have to find some ACV and keep her healthy. She has been doing this for over a week. She free ranges all day but the coop is still open and she can return to her feeder anytime. She has a wading pool filled with clean water, a bucket filled with water, along with the 5 gallon metal waters. They do love their water!

I worry that she has something caught in there because she is quite the curious grazer. If she sees it she tries to eat it. I am afraid that even with all my effort she may have tried to eat something inapproiate. I hate to take a goose to the vet but I may have to just have my vet make a house call.

It maybe a good idea if she keeps it up if you have a vet that will make a house call. If you do get the ACV don't put it into metal it will cause them to rust. I use ACV 3 times a week in all my buckets and waterers 1-2 Tablespoons to 1 gallon of water. I even use it myself. I know what you mean about picking up and eating anything, I am constantly watching the ground for stuff that washes up since we have had so much rain this year. Once my goose got hold of some bird netting just a small piece but she had it wrapped around her lower bill and her tongue, She was in distress and so was I when I saw her I had to cut it loose. Please post back how she is doing.

Great news!!! After a trip to the vet and medicine this is what was down Gabby's throat. It is about 12 inches of string with grass wrapped around it. I am so happy but I bet not near as happy as she is. I gave her the last of her medicine tonight along with her antibiotic shot so she feel lots better now.

Thank you so much for posting back and letting us know how she is doing and my goodness what came out of her throat. It's amazing what they will eat. Glad to hear she is well now.
