My Hatching Journey: the Adventures of a Complete Newbie

Well phooey. Candled, and 9/17 are clear!!

All 3 of my EE look good, and 1/2 bantam. The 2nd bantam has a blood ring.
1 SLW, all 4 turken, 1 cochin, 1 GLW are clear..... As well as both dark brahma!!! Nooooooo!!

So down to: 3 EE, 1 bantam, (my eggs) 1 cochin, 1 LO, and one GLW. Pretty bad.... Don't think I'll be buying from this person again, unless day 14 reveals otherwise. I left all the clears in, even though some could almost be used as a lantern they are so see-through.

Sometimes that happens . tell the supplier they need to know and you never know they might replace the eggs.

Isn't too big of a loss, fortunately. I only paid $5 for the dozen.

I did several shipped GLWs and didn't have much luck with them . have some nice hens but they are two years old and the rooster is not getting to the best ones or so it seems . I have ten pullets saved for replacement but only one is really worth keeping

the combs are just wrong . not nice and full so most of them came from two hens that came from a different place. Plus my two best SLW hens are in the same pen . I still have a lot of pens to build and need to separate things . trying to stay away from shipped right now. If you decide to ship . Make sure you go for the best quality you can find and that you use a good shipper. quality GLWs are hard to find . Good quality SLWs are also hard to find at a reasonable price. point being it cost just as much to feed bad chickens as it does good chickens .

Not going can't go where you already are . I ONLY WANT A FEW I CAN'T HAVE PERSONAL RELASHIP WHEN I HAVE TO MANY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And now your hearing things . yep your a hatch hatchaholic . Therapy is just beyond the next hatch . Good luck finding a support group on here though .Some of the worst enablers I've ever seen .Course on the off chance that you are hearing chirping you have incredible hearing or them going to be super chicks

You can't exactly ask somebody for help stopping when they themselves are addicts, eh? Instead of help, I get egg offers.

I seem to have enabled all my friends.... Got one set up with a new flock, and the eggs in now are for another friend.... Oy... Now I can't even find help in the real world.

PS. Duck people replied..... Still waiting on someone else to respond before I get a final answer, but maybe I can get some!!

Thanks... Even if they only have 'lings, they are straight run so...... Hm, in a few months......

The extra week is the biggest reason I don't think hatching them would be good for my sanity. Are duck eggs easier to candle?

Oh so much fun to candle!! Bigger eggs, so you can see the little guys swimming around in so much more space! And mine always seemed a lot more active than any of the chickens I've hatched. And the white shells help a lot too. Blood vessels and everything so much more visible! Plus there are so many more days when the candling action is going on with ducks. For a candling addict like me, it doesn't get any better!

Yea, the last week is torture! Plus, they take longer to hatch once they start pipping too. 48 hours to zip is unreal, but they take their own sweet time. Its truly nail-biting for those of us that like that quick gratification (yes, I'm talking hatching here LOL)

BUT THEN....OH... THEN.... comes the actual hatching... there is not much more adorable than a newly hatched duckling!!!!!

And in other news, I've decided to leave some of my girl's eggs in her nest and see if she wants to sit on them. She was on them this morning!!

That sounds awesome. When is lockdown for ducks? Day 25?

Oh my goodness. 48 hours to wait for a ling to appear will send me to the looney bin. 12 hours for chickens had my brain off completely.

In other news here.... I actually completely FORGOT to candle until day 8. What is wrong with me?? I never, ever thought I'd do that. (I can't see anything until day 7, so that is usually when I candle first)

It is so much easier and less stressful now, to just be able to know temps are correct without even looking at the thermometer. Only time this thing spikes is if it is a perticularly warm day, and I can predict those and catch them real soon..... When ambient temps are normal, every time I check it is at 101.5. Rarely more and rarely less.

I'm running dry for humidity this time (26%) and air cells are looking good...... Yay.....
