My heart is broke...that stupid *** bear UPDATE!!!! Problem gone!

Except for an electric fence there is *no such thing* as a bear proof coop.... They've broken into houses where this person is from chicken wire isn't keeping them out.

There is nothing that will keep a black bear out if they really want to get in (except maybe electricity). They will rip solid doors right off of the hinges to gain access...wire or not wire..he was coming in.

I live in an area with bears and even in Ga we had bears come down out of the mountains. I know from experience even a raccoon can get through rusty chicken wire. If an animal is determined to get in they will succeed. That is a given. A better coop and run can help. I am not trying to start an arguement. I am very sorry the fowl was lost.

The OP stated in a later post there wasn't time to bear proof it.

Build a better coop. Add e;ectrice wire. Don't give up on your chickens.

well here in fla we got some bears but you have abetter change of getting struck by lighting then seeing one

The Florida black bear is the largest native land mammal in Florida. It is shy and secretive, hiding in dense vegetation and rarely seen in the wild.

estimate that only about 1,500 black bears remain. But black bears no longer roam throughout the entire state. There are just eight locations in Florida where black bears live freely

Deb. I'm so sorry to hear about your loss believe me when I say I know *just how you feel*! you know it took me until the next day to be able to go 8really clean up* & I never took pictures, but I'm starting to think that we're going to start to have to do just those things & send THEM to the newspapers & TV stations because there is NEVER any stories of the destruction that is done or the "broken hearts" left behind when peoples pets are killed. I don't think people realize just how often that people animals are killed & when concern for a *human child* is expressed we're all told they're "not meat eaters"? Are they kidding???? I guess technically chicken is poultry & not a meat? I think people need to see how often they actually do eat meat!

I'm not that far from you I don't think & please if there's anything I can do please do let me know ok?
