I commend the young woman for standing up for her beliefs. Of course, no one wants to see people hurt, but reducing the bear population without looking at the underlying causes of the problem will only make things worse in the long run.

As a society, we have to address problems like global climate change, the destruction of natural habitats, human overpopulation, mass extinction of animal and plant species, and logging of old-growth forests.

I believe the young woman is right to take offense at some of the attitudes here. There are absolutely idiots who called themselves environmentalists, but who do more harm than good with their extremist activities. Similarly, there are plenty of people who foolhardily pretend that the environment is someone else's problem and that military assault weapons should have the same legal protection as hunting rifles.

I hope that the people on this board can see past the polemics of both groups. Control of animal populations through hunting is important for conservation, and so is control of human expansion, of overfishing and over-hunting, and of industrial pollution.

well I had another "visit" here to my house today too & now that my beautiful Barred Rock Roo is gone....... He bravely lead all 5 cubs away from the hen the sweet guy..... Yes it leaves a nasty taste in my mouth and my attitude not a happy one at those who terroize us for wanting to keep our homes safe or even for defending ourselves...

I think to take offense at the attitudes here and be so vocal is insensitive to those who've *just witnessed the masacre of animals they cared for*. It's not an easy thing to see & then having children watching and screaming etc. is even harder. And we expect these same people to have a cherry attitude or an attitude that welcomes back the preditors? We can't be out "rebuilding forests, & giving them land to hunt" & even if we could that could not cut back the population of the bears. An orgainized hunt with numbers so the population & hunts are under control is the remedy & those groups just do not want to hear this....

Well my kids have a 1/2 mile walk to the schoolbus every morning on a desolate road that our house is at the end of. THe schoolbus will not come down the road to get them. We have bears. This summer a mother with 2 cubs and a boar. I have run into one just the other day. If I had a gun it would be dead. We have only a fall bear hunt, and it is not enough, they have to reinstate the spring hunt.
The excuse of 'people taking up thier territory doesn't work around here...there are alot more bear acres here than there ever will be people acres! THe fact is that they are overpopulating and getting to be dangerous. The other fact is that they used to know that humans could hurt them, so they stayed away. Now they demand attention!
I am all for the bear hunts! And I would ADORE a bear rug for in front of my fireplace:>)

Oh my goodness! Why why why are animals worth MORE than humans now?? That bear killed 52 people and the DOG who got a bear cub is in trouble? The dog (and owner) should be the hero of that town!!

I am a bit torn to be a mother and understand that DRIVE to feed your young. Wow. I hate that the bear steals her food, but hate to think of her starving and having three babies looking to her for food. THAT being said--the bears need to STAY in their woods and leave us alone in our homes and we should leave them alone in their woods.

To value an animal OVER a person, though? I wonder if these people who value an animal's life OVER a human life has children or ever learned to love others? God created these wonderful animals, and I love mine soo much, but--but to put their value above a human-God's most precious creation is wrong in my opinion:

"Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth. And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be on every beast of the earth, on every bird of the air, on all that move on the earth, and on all the fish of the sea. They are given into your hand. (Genesis 9:1-2)

I respect what God created and I enjoy my animals every second, but I know that He put us in charge of them--and respect that as well.

At least hubby and I are doing our part to "be fruitful and multiply.." hehehe

My two cents, anyway.

Remember! Opinions are like belly buttons; everyone's got one and some are smellier and bigger than others. ;-)

Sorry so sorry about your coop!

Yep it was rusty but it broke through a lot more than that and up untill the past little bit bears never bothered us it was hawks so I was secured from them. I have had chickens many many years. There is nothing I could have done except try electric fencing and I did not have enough time to get that up. I believe am done... We will be keeping our pigeons...

I am so sorry for your loss.
I am also sorry to inform the OP that there is no such thing as bear proofing anything.
A determined Bear will litterally tear a door right off its hindges to get inside.
Have you called F&G? showed them the pictures and asked for doomage. I know money isnt going to take the pain away, but it will at least compensate some of the loss.
If there is a skinny bear with 3 cubs there is a short time before a Human gets hurt, this bear needs to be either relocated or destroyed.
This is a potentially dangerous situation. It needs to be handled Now.
A bearSkinny at this time of year is not getting enough to eat and feed her babys. Either something is drastically wrong with her ( sick) or she is a young and inexperienced mother, either way this Bear has got to go.

Well being a tree hugger is all well and good BUT!
Are you going to give up your home, your hot water , your electricity, your car, your computer, should I go on? and give it back to the animals , nope I think not, so you can sit there and happily proclaim your a tree hugger but untill you give up all luxuries you are enjoying right now you are not less than a hipocryte.

You just called a 15 year old girl a hipocryte. Thought I would share that with you.

Also if you read the OP and the following posts you will find that they are in an area that they can get no help due to the protest groups. They are trying to get help to have a hunt but I fear someone will have to be hurt or killed before they change their ignorant stand.

Hey I had seen this story online some where when I went looking for info at the start of all of this. Well really our start to this was long ago, but it's gotten SO much worse with each year & it's really because the bear are multipling now almost like rabbits.... Someone was telling me that because the sows are so well feed their fertility is way up too & they're well feed because they can just break into any where & eat what ever they want. They no longer have to wait for garbage cans.

When I was reading your story the fears I had years back with our kids at the bus stop (they're all grown now) just came flooding back. I ended sending them with *any kind of lunch in their book bags* & really you just don't dare because the bears can smell it.

We had actually just put the electric fence up around the chicken coop & their outdoor area, but I'd been letting them free range the back yard while I was at home & I actually had the sliding glass door open with just the screen. I was fortunate that the dog who started barking scared them off a little bit & then the pot lids, but that the same dog hadn't just knowcked the screen door off/out because she can and she knows it. There were 5 cubs in the yard & thn mother I guess. I hadn't seen mom just the cubs until they were on the other side of the fence. They were wailing pretty loud and so I'm hoping they had gotten zapped going after the smaller chicks I had in the pen. I dunno though. And these "groups" that recrute the teens etc. they are pretty scary too & almost as dangerous as the animals. Some poor guy from one of the university labs has had his family so terroized he's switched professions & come out publicly saying so to have them leave his family alone. His poor kids are just completely truamatized. We've had the groups here & the animal groups call on them & they come out so even to try to protect yourself you're at the mercy of these nuts....

When I put in OP I did not mean the original poster, I meant the other poster. next time I will be more specific.
yes I know exactly how old the child is, but no matter. H/She is old enough to understand that as long as there are people and animals living in close proximity there is going to be dangerous encounters,
I also read there is no help available to the original person.
Its like that everywhere, NH has a hunt in the fall also. is it helping NO it isnt,
People still put out Bear feeders then have the audacity to complain the bears are eating out of them. Or the bear is being a problem , kills dogs or worse broke into the hosues because the feeders were empty.
As for tree huggers yes they have a place in society but they have to understand when they go getting all fanatical they must be willing to give up every luxury they have now in order to back up their words. Other wise its just empty words.
I am 50 and female, I hunt I fish , I attend F&G meetings to insure our rights are protected.
I am for controled management. It has been proven the so called Birth Control methods tried have not worked.
Selective Hunts are the only effective way to help People such as the Original Poster.
My heart goes out to anyone devistated by preditor attacks. with out control of some sort the next Victim may not be birds, rabbits, cattle sheep it WILL be Human.

ETA:
Whats to stop this Sow Bear with cubs from coming back in the middle of the night , breaking into this familys home and killing one or more of the family?
what then are they told, well after the first attack you should have moved away? You knew the bear would be back. ugh some people just dont get it.
