my heart swells for my two new ladies! UPDATES*******

SATURDAY October 16th Update*******
I still had them separated for sleeping headquarters last night, but Elly, May and my others are out free roaming together now together when I am home. May sticks to herself around the coop area and gets kinds nervous when she cant see me. I really dont think she has ever been around other chickens before. She is not sure what to do yet with them. It's really funny to see her looking at my girls with 'wonder'. My roos will be picking at the cherry tomatoe plants, or trying to find her a 'nest' area like they do and she just turns her head sideways and I can just tell she is thinking "WHAT are you? WHAT are you doing? and WHY do you look so retarded?"
Elly? Well she is just a bad as*. She is gonna rule the chicken world someday. She is the Sara Palin of the chickens.

She is so tiny but such a little ball of energy. She is hanging out with the group when they are around, but my other hens actually run from her. She has had a few scrabbles, and has backed off, but she is a little fireball. I had already collected my 7 eggs from my hens, found 1 from Elly also. About three hours later? I found an egg on the ground in a tipped over box. COULD it have been from my little May May?????????? Not sure, but i think maybe. I never figured she would even lay. She is so skinny and abused looking.
They are both eating well, (VERY well. They love soft cat food, BOSS, yogurt, cottage cheese, tomatoes, spaghetti and especially love ice cream cake.)

SUNDAY October 17th - The still slept apart, we put together as soon as they all woke up. I put them in the pen together today, No free roaming. and they did great!!!!!! a few chest bumps, wings, etc. But i think the road has gotten shorter. They spent all day together cooped up and did fine. May is taking a little bit of a harrassing from the others, I knew she would because of her beak. She is starting to catch on what to do though. SHE DUST BATHED!!!!! WHO HOOOOOO!!!! the first time since she has been here. Elly jumped in first thing out of the coop and May looked at her, and it's like a light turned on. SHe jumped right in there and peat moss flew like never before. It was awesome to see. I think i had a tear running down my eye as i watched the two dig holes and see a little head peep out of the top. My others were sun sleeping around a pine tree not more than two feet away. By the end of the night, i felt good enough to let Elly and May join the rest in the same part of my coop. May still does not know what a perch is, she has tried a little. but it doesnt seem like her feet quite get it yet. Everyone came in at dusk, proceeded to perch away from Elly. I picked up May and put her on the perch next to my favorite hen who is the calmest and nicest. I petted Daytona on the head and asked her to take care of my little May May. I think she understood me, cause she let her stay next to her. May seemed to get the idea and she settled down. (she smiled!!! I swear she did) Elly of course just proceeded to take over the roost and one by one she kicked the other 7 girls and 2 roos out of her way. MISS SNOT!!!!!! that's what I am gonna name her now. LOLOLOL. Anyway, after a half hour or so, I felt everyone was comfortable, I gave them their nightly drink of water (They are so spoiled) and closed the door. It was actually hard to walk away and go inside for the night. I kept wanting to check on them and make sure no one was killing each other in there.

MONDAY OCtober 18th --- WELL.... Elly and May had their little 'sleep over' at the girls coop last night. I went out this morning to see how everyone was and let them out for the day. I wasnt sure what I was going to find. I had visionsof blood splattered all over the wall, chickens in pain, feathers ripped out and little miss Elly with her army fatigues standing in the middle of it all saying "COME ON !!!! MAKE MY DAY!!!!"

Nope, all was well in the coop of Bird and the Fluffy Butts. Three were in nest boxes laying! and the rest were waiting at the door for goodies, including Elly and May.

Life is good once again with all. Elly and May are now part of the Fluff Butts.

Such a wonderful ending for Elly and May, to end up with a family that loves them. It's amazing! It hurts my heart how people can hurt so many of God's precious creatures. Especially chickens, they have such human-like personalities. Thank you for rescuing them and sharing their wonderful story with us.

here we are, almost 4 weeks now since Elly and May came to their new home. as of today (11/8/10) Elly is now one of the pack. She doesnt peck the others, doesnt get pecked much and does really well with everyone. She is laying me an egg a day, is happy, and an all around good girl.

Now May???????? oh my MAY!@!!!@#*&@^(#&$%#*%^$( She is the light of my life.

She loves to be held and cuddled and kissed and generally spoiled. She knows it too. the others had kinda driven her off of them (because she is different with her beak I think) for the last few weeks.

She hangs around with me outside the coop when I am home, follows me everywhere. I even took her up into my deer stand last week. (OMG that was funny) I had a doe come out of the swamp and she cocked her head sideways and clucked to the dumb thing. I really just wanted to see what she would do. I didnt have my bow with me....

She has gained a TON of weight. I gotta watch it now, because I am getting concerned that she may be becoming 'hefty'.

I think she laid me an egg last week! It looked like the little itty bitty ones that my hens left me for their first eggs. I have not seen another one from May since, so who knows. Outside with the others, in the past she just watched them scratch from a distance looking at them like they were morons. She never did it herself. Made me concerned that she didnt know how to (???). Two days ago it was like a light was turned on. I cant get her to stop!!!! scratch scratch watch the others, scratch scratch peck, watch the others. She cought on!!!! yesterday i couldnt even slow her down long enough to give her a smooch good night!
Excuse my bad hair day......!!!

So good to hear that your new girls are doing well!!! Great photos and such a heartwarming story. Thank you and please keep us updated regularly!

I think I might have a soft spot for rescues now. I just can't see how anyone could harm either of these precious girls! I put myself out there as a rescue site if anyone needed help today. Hope i am not biting off more than i can chew? I have the room: 5 ac. of just grass, trees, house etc. no neighbors around except one who adores the girls! another 200 of crop ground across the street that i can utililze, couple hundred acres of woods behind me i have access too, dirt road, good water, nice coop ( I would have to build a bigger one in the spring), available food, etc. I have the time to spend with them, a great vet who thinks i am a wierdo and call me St. Francis or EllyMay Clampet.
