My hen has a prolapsed vent !

They told me that she was very active yesterday. She was eating, drinking and scratching around like a hen. I just hope she stays that well until I get back

@Janke Beukes if she is easy to catch, when your Uncle catches her ask him to wrap a towel around her so she can't flap her wings, and drape another towel over her head. This quietens them right down and will allow your Uncle to put on Vaseline and push the prolapse back in. It would be great if he could do this for her!

Ok I'll tell him. But do you guys think that she will be able to survive until I get back? Once a day she will get vaseline put on her bum if it prolapses and she will have food and water. She will be free ranging and the rooster will be locked up to prevent pecking. Do you think she will be fine until then?

Yes there is a chance she will be just fine, especially with your generous Uncle offering his time!! She certainly has a lot of good wishes coming at her from people here

Okay guys so update on Speedy : her prolapsed has no more scabs on. Everything fell off and is pinkish skin, not as red as the photos from earlier. They put on vaseline on her prolapse and gently pushed it in. There was also no more poop stuck to her. She was a bit more sleepish, but still did eat and drink that morning. She went up her cage again. I'll post a photo. She looks a bit dirty in the pic but she took a dust bath and it's a bit stuck to her feathers. So i think she's doing good. Do you guys think the prolapse is better now that it is more pinkish and not as red and no white scabs?

The stink and the stickiness sounds like vent gleet to me. The Chicken Chick has a good article on it--it is fixable. I went through it a couple of weeks ago--the vent would not stay in and some of the tissue had begun to dry out. Long story short, we repaired the vent by means of a padded sling (pad over the vent) made of vet wrap and a baby wipe. Search this forum and you'll find good directions. You might want to isolate her to keep the other hens from picking at her vent.
If it IS vent gleet (white-yellowish discharge), you can rub monistat on her bum or athlete's foot cream.

We've already treated the dried out parts. It has fallen off already. She does not have vent gleet. The problem is her prolapse sticking out and im away for the week. I couldn't make a bandage because i am not here and she can hook onto something and become stuck. I'm coming home on sunday and will then make a bandage. She is being treated while I'm away by putting vaseline on the prolapse to keep it from drying out. She is also seperated from our rooster until she is healthy again. The only problem is me being away until sunday and not being able to monitor her or treat her

Sounds like your uncle is doing a great job taking care of her for you! Deserves an award for going above and beyond the expectations of the average chicken sitter. It’s wonderful that the Vaseline is helping and there no stuck on poop, that he is helping to try to keep the prolapse in place until you can return and resume treating her is awesome.

I know. I owe him big time ! I still hope and pray everyday that my hen will be ok until I get back

Sounds like things are going well, then. Honey is also good to put on a prolapse--keeps it moist and speeds healing. All best to you and yours!
