my hen has spurs?

Spurred hens have absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the multiple spur gene. It's 2 separate and unrelated traits. I raise multiple spurred fowl, and have never seen it before. I have seen a fair bit however in single spurred females, but never in a multiple spurred breed. I think you will find the genetic texts back me up here as well.

Even Jim LaGendre of his famous Silver Spangled Hamburgs would vouch for that, he saw nothing wrong about having hens with spurs because they make GOOD sons LOL!

I 've heard the Southerners saying that Gamebirds' mothers should HAVE spurs. I never asked why but now I did after I got with Jim about spurred hens because I had several SSHB hens having spurs.

Reds, Take another look at my post. The old Gamefowl breeders would not breed to a female without spurs. I have long history with Gamefowl and have known some of the great breeders.

So breeds like Sumatras with multiple spurs don't have spurs on their hens? Do you know whether hen spurs is dominant or recessive or etc.?

One of my Brown Leghorn hens has small spurs. Probably about 1/4" inch long, seem to have stopped growing.
My black copper maran rooster's spurs are thick and only about 1/2" long.
My rhode island red rooster has dandy spurs. I use a electric "sander" that doctors use for human toe nails. Works fast! Smells a bit burnt afterwards it goes so quickly but no harm to the rooster. His are long and grow fast.

I have just noticed one of my Isa Brown girls has what look like spurs but its just the flesh, from a distance they look like small spurs, funny thing is she can be quite nasty to my sons and partner but has never attacked me. I have 8 girls and she is the only one who portrays the dominance to humans. I can see what is meant by she would make a great son lol. I dont know why Ive only just noticed she has them! Could they possibly have recently grown? She is 2 yrs old
