He is surprisingly handling it very well considering he didn't even know we were getting chickens until he came home from work a month ago and there was a brooder full of chicks

My kinda gal! It's a lot better to ask for forgiveness than it is to ask permission, but it's best by far just to do it and ignore their whining.
