My Imprinting Adventure!

I had a hatch the same time as one of my peahens , I took all her chicks but 1 and when she made it back to the brooder later that evening I let her in the pen with all the wee peas, the ones I hatched and the ones she hatched are now imprinted on both of us .

So Cartspony, even though our older four year old peacock is mean, is he interested in the peahens and does he breed with them? I would not the peachick to be useless since it might be a new patterned bronze bird...

An update on the actual imprinting adventure, but feel free to continue the discussion we were having since I find it to be helpful:

I selected the larger egg from Pen #5 to be imprinted. When I candled it I noticed some movement, so I am now constantly talking to the egg when I check on the incubator.

Another thing is that I need a name for the peachick, which will be something bronze related. Any ideas will be helpful.

I am getting a play pen and will set up a brooder for the peachick.

He's with three hens and another male... I'm pretty sure he gets to do most of the breeding, but since I've never seen them mate, I'm not positive.

But do you still have a bond or have you forgotten that after he turned mean? I am sure MinxFox will let us know next year how Peep is with breeding. I right now just hope that it will be friendly and not turn mean. Any ideas for a name?

The bond is long gone, has been since he started living with the others when he was six months old.

As for names, lol, I am the *wrong* person for that, lol.

Really? But I was planning on introducing the peachick to other peafowl, or did you stop spending time with him?

Same here when it comes to names... My birds do not usually freaked unless it is a special one.

My oldest male is not imprented but he is very tame, what I have noticed is that during mating season he protects what he deems his breeding area and if anything except me gets in it he rushed them , I make it a point to stay out of this area as do most of the other animals here so , now that there breeding season is over this has stopped.

I wonder if them being free will make a difference, if I stay out of his area when it is breeding season or will he try to chase me like my other peacocks chase each other.

That is interesting. With your birds it seems like they would behave more like they would in the wild since they are free.
