My Indio Gigante Thread

It's funny you say she went broody late fall, because isn't that pretty uncommon? It must be a thing with this breed, as I have a hen(indio gigante) hatching out a clutch right now. It's really cold here in ALABAMA right now.

I've had quite a few mid winter hatches from my Indios. Now I have another first for them - a 7 mo old hen that is trying to go broody. Never had one that young, she's only been laying eggs for about a month!

Wow that is young. So what color chicks have you gotten so far? And where did you get your Indios?
I've had a wide variety of chick colors, from solid light yellow, brown, yellow with brown stripes on their back, black & white, gray - a real rainbow of colors!

I got my initial 12 chicks from Greenfire Farms. I got them soon after they first imported the breed. I think the quality of their Indios is better now than it was back then. I've since added new blood to my flock with several egg purchases. I bought 12 eggs from a breeder in Illinois, 7 of those hatched (2 roos), and 1 of those hens is pure white, not a colored feather anywhere on her. Then I bought 6 eggs from a breeder in California, 2 of those hatched and they are my most beautiful Indios (well 1 of them is handsome cause he's a roo).

These 2 little cuties grew up into these 2 beauties in 7 months. Sampson was an assisted hatch. Over 48hrs with no progress from just a tiny breathing hole in his egg & membranes were beginning to dry out. SO thankful he survived & THRIVED. He's baby with bootie on his foot.

Chick colors don't always tell what colors adults will be -

Sampson's a virtual rainbow. Iridescent blue in the sun, brown, black, blond, white, he's got them all

Thank you! ❤️ I’m planning on breeding them for myself at first, but I definitely might sell any future chicks I hatch from them! I’m also planning on getting some more chicks next spring, as the breeder I bought these from said she’d probably have another bloodline up for sale by then, so I’d love to eventually introduce a clean line into my flock once I’ve got them going.
Does the breeder you get them from also have leige fighters or just the gigantes?
