My Ivy.. Latest Relapse...She's Gone

It is hard to watch them go. Shoot, it's hard for me to watch yours go! Your Old Hen's Home is gonna be empty. That is just sad, so sad.

Grow attached and then they leave.

I was reading in the definition of "Heritage," .....

3. Long, productive outdoor lifespan. Heritage Chicken must have the genetic ability to live a long, vigorous life and thrive in the rigors of pasture-based, outdoor production systems. Breeding hens should be productive for 5-7 years and roosters for 3-5 years.

Would you expect heritage chickens to live longer (longer than they are supposed to be productive)? I sure do not want to start anew every 3 years or so.

well dammmm dammmm and double dammmmm. Poor Lexie

That girl must be so confused but how completely made of awesome is she to stand guard over the dying? Amazing! Simply amazing creatures.

May Livvie pass quickly and quietly with as much dignity as Ivy.

Cyn I am so so sorry. Your flock is not cursed, they are succumbing to business ignorance.

Dang, wish I could even get them to live to 5 years old, much less be productive to 5 or longer. Hatchery stock sure doesn't equal heritage, does it?

There aren't enough camera crews in the nation to cover all the tears that are shed when our loved girls pass.

Exactly. Heck the news crew was to afraid to come near here whilst I was newly grieving over my Thor. I would have shot them for them for fun of it! Which of course through my tears would have meant having to shoot them several times because of my aim being slightly off.

cyn, I have to say you have made me nervous about my BR hens. I am so sorry you have to keep going through this.

I also thought it was kind of awesome that the day my Janis and your Ivy passed, the northern lights were visible at my house (only happens like once every few years). I couldn't help but feel that it was god's hommage to our beautiful girls.

many hugs for you, again, sorry for your troubles. Funny how the things that can bring us such joy can be so painful sometimes.
