My Ivy.. Latest Relapse...She's Gone

I just got home and checked for an update. I knew this was coming. We all did.

I'm so sorry Cyn. She wasn't even one of my girls, and yet I feel so very bad.

I'm already missing her and I never even got to meet her. Does that sound silly?

She knows you loved her, Cyn. That you'll always love her. Short as her life was, it was the very best you could give her. Please, try to find comfort in knowing that every minute of her life with you was good. Every chicken should be so lucky! So very few are.

I'll still be praying for Ivy. Maybe the great spirit will take note and realize you've gone through enough for this year.

Thanks so much, Serrin. This is the first time ever that I've been without a Wyandotte in my flock, but I think for now, no more Wyandottes. They could never measure up to the first three sweethearts I had. I had two other SLW girls last year, also from the same hatchery, but sold them together when I downsized a tad. I hope so much that the same thing doesn't happen to them.

Update on Ivy: Her abdomen is completely deflated. It was huge and tight as a drum before we gave her the heavy penicillin doses. She is still thin and weak and may still pass on (the early internal layers never had a bloated abdomen, either), but she is walking around slowly and eating a bit.

We miss Violet. That was a great lady, a very dignified hen. She died the way she lived, quietly and not causing anyone any trouble. Just a wonderful girl.

I have to qualify that; she caused the young upstart cockerels plenty of trouble, LOL.

I'm also very worried for one of the older Buff Orp hens, Ginger. Today, for the first time in ages, I saw her on a nest. She did not lay an egg and left. This is usually how it starts. I haven't seen an egg from Ginger in over two months.

It would be nice if Ivy could recover like she did the last time, but seems that it will happen again sometime.

I'm so sorry that your Violet has gone over the Rainbow Bridge. She had the very best life with you & your DH.

I hope & pray that Ivy & Ginger will be ok for awhile longer. I know how it feels to lose your loved chickens. Its hard to believe how they can sneak into your heart and hold on tight.

You two take care.

Dad had to have two pints of blood yesterday for some reason. He seems to be doing okay, though. The surgeon said that it was the worst gallbladder he'd ever seen, a dead organ. Guess it was close to gangrenous. Anyway, it's out and hopefully, he'll get some strength back. Thanks for asking.
