My Journey Begins--1st time Incubating--Join Me!!

hey I get the emails from byc but dont see my name on the list.
Nevik.
Got a bunch of hatching stories.

Did you know if poop builds up on their little butts
You can rinse them in the sink under warm water and it will wash off. You might have to pull on it a little.

Chicks are like kids.............
Sometimes you have to just wash they little butts..........

I suggest listening to Fleet Foxes..........
It gives ya some faith in yourself

Day 14

Ok, I CANNOT CRACK OPEN THE BAD EGGS!!! IT MADE ME HAVE DRY HEAVES. We culled 7 eggs tonight after candling them, and none of them were formed, except 1 did have a bit of a baby chick in it, but it was all bloody red, and just a little bit of a circle. I couldn't look at it though because it made me throw up (not actually, but going through all the motions. Sorry, I know TMI, but this is my experience). I had to have my husband crack the last 6 eggs. I did look at each one, and most of them were just brownish yolks, but it was seriously disgusting and everyone was having a blast watching me gross out so badly.

But I think we did a great job deciding which ones were bad because they were all bad. We have 24 eggs left in the bator, and only 2 of them we have a question about. There were two we weren't sure, but thought they looked formed enough to give the benefit of the doubt, so we left them in there. We hope they don't explode or anything like that!!! The ones we thought were good all had very established air sacs, and the rest of the egg was pretty dark looking, and some of them had a bit of light down at the pointy end. So anyway, that was our experience on day 14, being first time incubator people!! Kristy

Day 15

Well today we were supposed to get our chicks from the feed store, but they called and said only 1/2 of them arrived, and the other 1/2 are supposed to come tomorrow. I hope they take good care of them.

The temperature around my eggs has been fluctuating, so the inside temp has been fluctuating too. It got up to 103, so I hope everything is all right inside the eggs. We are getting close to countdown time! Kristy

Day 16

Found the bator this morning at 104-105. I hate that stupid bator. It fluctuates a lot in temperature, I doubt anything is even alive in there. We have struggled this whole time with the temps staying consistent. I don't know if we'll get any hatch or not. We've probably cooked them, poor little things. I'm not doing this again unless I buy a Genesis 1588. I've heard they're a lot better than what I am borrowing. Kristy

Kristy, I have a 1588 for a bator, and a 1588 for a hatcher, and darling son has a 1602N for his duck eggs. I fight the 1602N for temp flux all the time, and it makes me appreciate the "plug & play" ease of the 1588. Save up, spend the $, and get the 1588. Good luck, Sending you hatching vibes!

Don't give up on these little ones, it takes alot longer for the temp in the egg to rise. They may be ok.

Well.... I started with you guys and have many ups and downs.... Today I lost all my 16 day old eggs to complete stupidty!!! I cooked my last 9 eggs with a hair dryer.... I am sick about this.... First and possibly last hatch complete disaster!

I had a serious ant invasion... and I mean TONS, from nowhere.... I am in Vermont, still have snow on ground.... But a trillion ants made their home in my incubator

.... Truly no idea where they came from or what they wanted (no bad eggs, super clean incubator....) Decided since I was nearing the end of the road with these eggs, (day 16) I should tackle the ants and prepare the eggs for last mile.... Well I came up with the brainy idea of blowing my hair drier over the eggs wrapped up in a towel... I had the drier on low/low... It took me less than 5 minutes to fight the ant war... Came back to find the eggs so hot that I couldn't hold them....

Candled to see no movement... recandled ... nothing... decided to open a bantam egg, I thought if the little ones made it, then the big ones did too... The yolk and whites were cooked

.... I knew it was over, cracked them all, dead.... I am kicking myself for doing such a stupid stupid stupid stupid thing!
