My Journey Begins--1st time Incubating--Join Me!!

I have family in Mabton, Sunnyside and Grandview. We got fresh snow here too but I just saw some migratory ducks landing in the hay field so Spring is coming.

I'm glad you're feeling better and your DD is awesome for helping out. Hope she enjoys candling as much as my kids do. They sit and chat with the chickies and have even named the eggs.

I have 2 that are worrying me cause I don't see much when I candle but so far they don't stink so I'm leaving them in there just in case.

Now, can we speed up time and get to day 21?

oh your like a kid at xmas...........
I think you will be surprized when they hatch, they will come instages. its easy to keep them warm enough with a light bulb.
Keep your temp around 100.
Then they need that to keep warm even after they hatch.
tons of info on byc.
keep your britches on honey you'll be fine, start another batch after that.
I find it is always good to be hatching free chicks from your fertilized hens.
I am trying to hatch some for my suburb, vinly village friends.
but of course like fishing... If you give, one day, they eat........... if you teach, you will loose customers................

Hey, I also put my first batch of eggs in my incubator on the 23rd. This is so cool that their are other people that will be hatching with me. I candled and can see the white egg has veins but th other eggs are brown and green and I can't see anything.

by the way brown eggs are really hard to see through, but you should be able to see the air sac. Day 7 and I see eyes in 2 out of 12.
every 21 days, kinda like a womans cycle............
Never thought of it that way until now...........lol

Day 7

We have no clue. We think we saw some little black eyes, we saw several that were 1/2 dark, and 1/2 totally clear, and we saw one that we thought looked like a yolk moving around in there. We cracked that one, and it looked like a normal egg, just clear and yolk. I feel like I didn't really weed out the bad ones if there were any. I'm unsure about those ones that were 1/2 dark and 1/2 clear. They seemed to have some veins though. We only got rid of one egg. We didn't candle all of them. Kristy

PS, we did see a lot of very defined air sacs.

My first time hatching too. With mine I candled at day 3 and 4 and ones that were clear I left. Then on day 10 I candled the 6 that were clear on day 3 or 4 and 2 had chicks. So I will always wait to toss any out. I think unless any are rotten I'm gonna wait till day 18, which is Thursday for me to get rid of the bad/unfertile ones.

Good Luck

P.S the 21 day wait is ending up surprisingly faster than I thought lol

I candled one of the silkies eggs that have been in for 7 days. I know, I know, you're supposed to wait for day 10, but really....who has the patience for that? I have VEINS, whooooppee.

Hey Kristy

I am just setting mine tonight so I am a week behind you.

I live in Vancouver WA.

I just got a older Sportsman 1502 and have it warmed up and getting everything stablized (I HOPE). I have a smaller digital going also as a back-up. It is an R-com 20 ...pretty nice but I think I will sell it after I have some success with my sportsman.

I have tried candling on the 7th day or so. If I see anything dark... I keep it. The last few hatches I try to wait until day 10 - 12. Sometimes curiosity gets the better of me and I just can't stand to wait. I have Marans and the eggs are so dark it is hard to see. I finally got an old slide projector off of craiglist... it works great for the really darks shells of Marans and Welsummers.

Only two weeks to go!!

Go FLUFFY BUTTS!!
