How do you do that exactly. Our lab is fixated on them right now.He is a service dog,so I need to be careful.

I don't quite know what a service dog is but to dominate a dog you have to do "the roll" and use a firm tone of voice. If you are the pack leader and you approach quickly and with an aggressive tone of voice, he should hunker down and turn his throat to the side...I just continue that turning until he is on his back and my hand is grasping the skin at his throat. I give a little shake, firmly and loudly state "NO" and then let him go. When I used the chicken, I let him approach the chicken while I held it, let him give a cursory sniff....if he became more interested in the chicken or moved further in to get closer, I did the roll and held the chicken at his throat, repeated the "NO" and let him go. I let him know the chicken is mine by holding it and petting it, I let him know that he is not dominant over the chickens or me. He isn't scared of the chickens, but he won't look directly at one now and, if I approach him while holding a chicken, he will scurry away while looking back and tail tucked. No pain involved. No shouting. No trauma. Just letting a dog know that some things are just off limits.

I have 2 beagles that used to run down my flock, We have trained and worked very hard, the one is still young and on a cool night mught gor for a 5 ft chase, then veres off to see what is happening on the other side of the house. I am 5 months at theretraining with no incidents.

Did have them under the coop one night barking for 2.5 hours and would not come out, when they did, my dh set a trap and got a big possum. SO they did their job.

Lucy the young one can't stand it if the hens get treats and she doesn't, so it is treat time for everyone now.

I have 8 new ones in my bedroom, cukoo marans, and can't tell if they are roos or what, but the dog has absolutely no interest in them eigher.

Yeah!!

I'm sorry this happened to your chickens

Two of my three dogs did the same thing to one of mine on July 4th. The third dog, a black lab, is the only one wouldn't have anything to do with the chicken. He was actually afraid of it. Go figure. Now he tries to keep the other two away from the chickens when they get too interested in them.

I wish that would work with me... What new chicken? I don't see any new chicken(s)? Those? They have been here for YEARS, I can't believe you never noticed them before!

LOL, a lab wasn't my choice either. SHe just showed up IN my house one day. My hubby said where'd the dog come from? I said what dog?

We have no idea where she came from.

She's a beautiful dog tho. I think she's mixed with something else, she's a chocolate lab, but has light brown markings on her from legs so I don't think she's purebred. She is real smart, and we've taught her some simple commands like sit. She just has so much energy that when you let her out the door she takes off running and there's no stopping her.

Im sorry....unfortunatley I had this happen with my lab and it never stopped every time I turned my back he was gettin at my birds. I have a flock of 60 and that darn dog wouldn't learn. I did everything from obediance training to tying a dead chicken on his neck letting it rot (gross I know but vet said if anything would work that would) Long story short he started killing EVERYTHING smaller animals, cats neighbors goats. Vet said the taste of blood drove him crazy. Had to put the dog down. This isn't the norm though because I have a Female BLK Lab that sleeps next to my pen. My free range birds will roost on her back she HAS NEVER hurt one. She has carried them in her mouth and licked them silly though which is rather funny to see. PICTURE THIS a 100lb Lab with 3 hens riding her back and 1 riding in her mouth pretty funny to see they are 1 big happy family. Good Luck Hope your Rooster is Ok.

I have a lab too. First thing we did when she was a puppy was make it AFRAID of the chickens. We put our meanest roo in a cage with the lab... now she's terrified of a day old bantie chick.

I'm so sorry though! Poor girl. If she's alive, she'll come out in a few hours. The same thing happened to one of my hens when my neighbor's dogs attacked her. She hid almost all day and came out scared and wounded at night. She survived though. It's probably better to let her come out on her own. She's reeeaaally terrified right now. Make sure to clean the wound and keep her isolated when she comes out. So sorry!
