My largest egg ever!!! (4 yolks) post #31

Love this thread! Wow~ what big eggs!

I love egg oddities. We have only had our chickens since fall of this last year. The only oddity we have had so far is one little egg. It was tiny. We boiled it along with some other eggs to make deviled eggs. When it was sliced in half it had a funny-ish yolk that had a blob of black on it. I wish I had thought to break it when it was raw... oh well!

Keep the pictures coming!

You probably had what is called a fart egg or wind egg. Sometimes they have a small yolk and sometimes they don't have a yolk Here is a pic of one I had. Most haven't had a yolk.

Here are some good websites for egg abnormalities.

So what would you all consider really big, then? I keep going back and forth on what size egg is noteworthy... Although, they're probably all pretty noteworthy to chicken that laid them I guess!

cmom- Yes, it was only 3.5 oz. Which is not that impressive. However, the scale is new and there are a bunch of fancy buttons to subtract out container weight or something, so I don't know if that weight is right. It is a normal width, but it is 4" long.

According to Bob Sheasley's delightful pean to our favorite fowl, "Home To Roost; Chickens Through the Ages", Aristotle, among other philossophers, spent quite a lot of time considering our favorite barnyard pals. They thought that all birds turned their excrement into eggs. The flighted ones did so with the assistance of their mates. The earthbound chicken, however, required nothing more than the wind up her behind to "stir it up" and make a 'wind" egg, or infertile, egg. A brisk wind was thought to turn on the hen, stirring her libidinous nature.

It may be an egg in an egg. I had one once that was quite long and it had a smaller egg inside it. One of the other posters (Chicken Rustler) did too.
